Show a eiranger being present at a rally would say: "These people are not sincere in this division business, they spend more on the question ' of Joseph smith's politics than they do on the tariff and other iie issues." "NUGGETS OFTRUTKi?)" The latest republican campaign document i a little pamphlet in which Joseph Smith and other prominent leadeis of the Mormon church are cartooned as republican protectionist. It is entitled "Nuggets "Nug-gets of Truth and Gems from the Speeches and Letters of the Lead ing Minds of Utah. (paBt and present.)" pres-ent.)" On the firt page is an eu-graving eu-graving of Joseph Smith, who by the way never was in this territory and consequently cannot be classed as one of the "leading minds of Utah." On the fourth psge is Brig-ham Brig-ham Younjj, on the seventh, John Taylor; on he eighth, Wiiford Woodruff; on the tenth, Joseph F. Smith, and on the lest. Frunk. J. Cannon a striking contrast. On the first page of th pamphlet, just beneath the cut is the following: ''All bur wrongs have arisen under the democratic ower and authority, and I have sworn tlint this arm shall fall frorn mv shuulder, and this tongue cleave to the roof of my ino.iili, before I will vote or them " , , PROPHET. JOSEPH SMITH. .Now the ol ject of the pamphlet to make temporary convents to the republican cause, by claiming that Joseph was a republican is made clear. . The paragraph quoted above is purported to be an extract This is nice stale of affairs; isn't it? Since the division movement was started the people have been trying hard to prove that they were sincere in that action, and now comes this pamphlet with insinuations to the contrary, and again progress in receives a set back. Shane on the author ! We believe that Joseph F. Smi'.h and Wiiford Woodruff are repre- iented in the pamphlet without their permission, and it might be interesting to read what they say in regard' to politics : If our names have been used in any such way, it has been entirely en-tirely without permission from us, and we hereby condemn it as wrong and reprehensible. It we have any desire in this matter it is that the people of this territory shall study well the principles ol both the great national parties and then choose which they will join, freely, voluntarily and honestly from personal conviction, and then stand by it in all honor and sincerity. Each party should have the same rights, privelees and opportunities as tue other. If any man claim tint it is the tush ol the first presidency that a democrat shall vote the republican ticket, or a lepublican the democrat ticket, let all people know' that he is endea voting to deceive the public and has no authority of tb.u kind from us. We have no disposition to direct in these matters, but proclaim that, as far as we ate concerned, the membes ol this chinch ate entirely and perfectly fres in all political afljirs. But they should not indulge in ill-feeling or personalities, President George Q. Cannon Can-non is absent, but we are sure that if he were here he would sign this declaration u-trH , Wilford Woodruff, Joseph F. Smith. Ol the presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. fiom' some speech or letter of which the prophet was the author, but the p mphlet fails to tell us where it can be found. We searched through and through all the church tconis that we tould obtain but fa-ied 1 fin ! it. H iwtiver, during the s a oil we canit across the 'ol-lowing: 'ol-lowing: ; t ' Nauvoo, June, 17, 1S44. Uncle John; Dear Sir. We feel to hope for the best, and determined to to piepare for the worst; and we want tms to be pour mutto in common with us That we will not ground our arms till we give thrn up by death. Free trade and sailor's rights, protection protec-tion of persons and proyerty wives and families.' Joseph Smith. Mayor of the City ol Nauvoo, and Lieut General of the Navoo Legion." The above is an extract from a a letter written by Joseph Smith to his Uncle Joha ten days befote his 'gaeSination and doubt the last words of the prophet on such matters. It can be found on page 153, Vol. 24, Millenial Star. From this we would infer tnat Joseph Smith was a democrat, but it is not for us us to argue the question, or indeed, for anyone. It is not an issue and, like the pamphlet, has no place in poltitcs. We publish the extract to show that if Joseph Smith ever favored republicanism- he also favored democracy. But admiting that Joseph Smith was a republican, - has that anything to do with the McKinley bill? with the sugar bounty or the reciprocity treaty with CuLa or Brazil? with tb Edmunds-Tucker law or the Force bill ? We think not. Joseph Smith waB assassinated 48 years ago last June and never read the McKinley bill. Joseph Smith was our prophet, our ecclesiastcal guide and leader. but had nothing to iio with our political po-litical views. He never told the people to. vote with or join any party par-ty but on - ho contrary told them to thiiik and vote as the pleased. The people do not care what. Joseph Smith's political view were, and no intelligent person would be a republican re-publican 6olely t because Joseph Smith was. The people are not mormons because Joseph Smith was a mormon, but because they believe be-lieve the religion he taught to" the correct one, because their ideas as to what consiitutes the gospel of Christ a:e identical with, his, but religion is not politics. Church ' and state are two separate and distinct dis-tinct institutions neither having any connection with the other. A member of either party can be just us good a Latter-day Saint as his political opponent. The only fault we find with the pamphlet is that the impulse which acutated the author to publish it, is wrong; It attempts to Jopen old sores; appeals to the ):rejuaice oi tne people ana is an insult to their intelligence, an out rage upon their freedom and a slur upon their manhood. It is issued to aid the republican cause but its mission mis-sion will fail. Democrats will ridicule ridi-cule it aud honorable republican will frown upon it as something beneath them. One bad effect the pamphlet will have is that the democrats will have to answer the claims therein and a |
