of the church authorities of a tremendous atte attendance n dance at the eighty first aeral atral annual annu al general conference of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints was fully realized not only was waa tho the attendance a record breaker but bill it was one ot of the most satisfactory con conferences ferencek feren ces of 0 the saints in many ways the sessions were held upon three days beginning thursday october 0 ind and lasting over sunday there being no session of the conference on saturday in order that the visitors might have an opportunity to visit the state fair the first session of the conference was held thursday morning at 10 in the tabernacle and the afternoon session at 2 while in the evening a convention of the genealogical society was held in it the assembly hall members of the faith were present from all part of the tha world but especially from utah fraho and a number df at the nearby near by cot colonies onles of the baurch on sunday the authorities of the church were sustained by the members of the church present there were no vacancies in the higher of the church but the recent death of df mrs bathsheba W smith one of the best known and most highly respected women in the church had caused a vacancy in the presidency of the tha relief society mrs airs emelene B wells was chosen to succeed mrs smith music was a prominent feature of the conference in addition to the great organ and the tamed famed tabernacle choir a number of the lest best soloists of the state were on the musical program although it had bad been feared president joseph F smith would not be able to be present owing to recent illness he presided at the opening session of the conference having risen from it a sick bed ills speaking was an effort however and several times during his talk of twenty minutes his voice broke and he was almost compelled to give way to his bla weakness after welcoming the saints andea and expressing his gratitude tor for such a large assemblage at the first meeting president smith talked on honor and truth he said there was never a time within his life when he had bad done anything dishonest nor had he ever broken faith he said lie ile declared that he had been true to his god to his bis church and to hla his fellow men and that there was nothing in his life which would make him quail when he came before the almighty on the day of reckoning it was waa with a voice of challenge that president preside 6 t smith intended hla his honor and character against attacks coming he be said from men within the church rt it was not a defense of the church position upon any matter nor la in general in regard to the p policies 01 cles ot of president smith there have been some attacks against the president by members of tho the church it Is understood der stood and these president smith answered in no uncertain terms in spite of hla his weak condition tho the rest ot of the work of the opening session ot of the conference consisted of 01 addresses by anthon H lu lund nd and john henry smith counsellors coun in the first presidency and four of the seven presidents of seventies there are 2000 missionaries in the field said president lund who are working diligently in the cause he urged attendance of children and membership in the various eions tor for their benefit he said the juvenile courts were doing good work and he be hoped the coming legislature would sustain them president john henry smith said the apostles ot of the church had never counseled the latter day saints to steal to lie to bear false witness against their neighbors neighbor they had always exhorted the people to pay their debts and to live the upright life he urged the extreme necessity of virtue among young men as well as among the maidens of zion at the afternoon session the speak era ars were seymour B young rulon S wils W ils joseph W mccarrin Mc Marrin ln and charles 11 hart elder hart talked upon the doctrines of the church and declared that the book of mormon was wall of divine origin elder Me Murrin ln dwelt at some length upon education as a part of the work of tho the mormon church seymour H B young declared that he was absolute ly certain that joseph P F smith had never broken a pledge or a promise and that he ha believed in the president without qualification elder E ider young gald a id tie sessions of the conference the features were the denunciation of the unfair tactics used by enemies amies of the mormon church a warning against the voicing of accusations against the general authorities by members of the church counsel to live clean and upright lives the prophesy that tho the mormons cormons would yet sweep over the nation eastward e it it w ard in victory and a general invitation nv t atlon to gentiles to come to zion to receive the faith following the system adopted atthe at the open opening trig of tho the conference the first presidency continued the roll of members of tho the first seven presidents of seventies friday finished them and called upon five of the apostles during the days session during tho the morning session J goldon golden kimball and Drig hain it roberts both of the seventies mado made interesting addresses especially elder roberts who traced the history of the church and spoke tor for a more careful investigation of the mormon faith by the outside world rather than a general criticism and ridicule without revson reason in addition to these two speakers the conference members heard aboa tle tie joseph F smith jr youngest of the richards it had bad been expected that some of tho the public questions would be taken up by the conference at the session which closed sunday but there was nothing in this regard only fily matters deeply concerning the church being considered it Is estimated that people on sunday listened to addresses jn in the tabernacle laberna cli assembly hall and in front float of 0 the bureau bureal of information building in the temple grounds ana and sustained all of 0 the th general gendal authorities of the church by vote in sustaining the general officers of the tha church members of tho the
