from one of the major parties than Mr Truman we ve dont don't know who it was Even Alf Landon was vas given a chance to win in 1936 by the infamous Literary Digest poll 1 But e no poll gave Mr Truman a chance His own party re re- rejected him and sought frantically for another candidate most any other candidate to whom the nomination could be given He was given a rather aged running mate so the deI defeat defeat de de- feat would not mar the political future of a younger man I f Even Mr 11 Truman in m some of his talks indicated he did not expect to win His own orn f party was split wide vide open with the strong in the South His lis time one-time secretary of commerce han had hanI hadr organized a new party to steal votes from the man who took I r I his place asp as vice president The Republicans were vere sure of winning A chief argument argument ment t in in congressional and senatorial contests was to send Republicans Republicans Republicans Re Re- publicans s so they would be on the inside with President Dewey They had their victory celebrations all planned and ready to go Perhaps that is one reason they lost for the Bible also states that pride cometh before a fall i But Truman won That ordinary American prone to tc toI tomake make mistakes in both speeches and action fiction has been elected I I to the highest office in the land by 23 million fellow ordinary Americans who also have a tendency to make mistakes In InI I fact America is made up of ordinary folks who are very apt to make many mistakes admit them and then seek to rectify them We have had few supermen if any Those who appeared to be supermen in their own right were largely I phonies who somehow covered their mistakes with greater mistakes and fooled the people into liking it Abe Lincoln was a common man a very very common common common com com- of his mon man detested by many of the intellectuals day Yet his stature grows with history mainly because he loved right more than honor and glory and power Honor glory riches cleverness sophistication deception trickery all these are eventually washed away by the merciless storms r of history But truth and right remain to garnish eternally the man who cloaks himself with them in public office though he may be unpopular at the time r We like to think of a column by by Westbrook about Mr Truman soon after the latter succeeded Mr Roosevelt as president Pray for me boys Mr quoted Truman I as saying to the assembled correspondents And Mr noted rioted His trousers were baggy at the knees and not from kneeling to Stalin either j A majority of American voters have given Mr Truman their approval He is now the president of all of us The casting castings of votes was not enough however He now needs sustaining work and prayers of supplication to back up the votes he received If he continue continues that early attitude Pray R for me boys he could very well vell turn out to be a second Lincoln a common ordinary man cloaked with righteous principles which the storms of history can never tarnish In supporting him all Americans those who voted for him and those who did not must ever remember that the strength of America does not lie He in hi the halls of congress congressI I I or in the executive branch of the government The strength I I I of America has been and must ever be in the moral fibre and andI I I the prod productive work of its individual citizens The mere t passage of a law will vill not build a single home hOIne 1 1 I or place a moderately priced beefsteak on your table The passage of a law v will perman perman man hour can control prices also can insure plenty A price price- control law alone is certain to create a black market with all alJ its attendant evils and to dis discourage and decrease production The mere passage of a law will not create plenty or make life one bit more secure But obedience by individual Americans to the irrevocable laws of God G d and the universe will make Americans strong individually and collectively Honesty in work and business diligence in study righteousness in conduct on the part of all ordinary Americans these will give Mr Truman the continued continued continued con con- d support he needs in leading the nation in solving it its I problems s I Americans must remember that Washington does not create wealth It can give nothing to
