C Kjar of Manti were members members members mem mem- bers of a company of more than than sixty people who made a tour of historical places of the Church o of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter Sain Saints and also other places of int interest rest as described in the following letter It was a strange sensation of speed when we stepped on the train in Salt Lake City the evening of October 4 1948 and stepped off of the train the next morning in Den Den- ver This sensation of speed and I accomplishment followed us from that moment on for the next three weeks We Ve saw so much and traveled so far that after ten days the impossible impossible impossible im im- im- im possible would not have caused any excitement There were sixty sixty- three sixty three people from California Idaho Wyoming and Utah on the tour They ranged in age from 20 to 80 and a more happy loving fun-loving group would be hard to find Denver was one of the most beautiful cities we were in The Theone Theone Theone one fact that stayed with us was the famous famous' traffic judge the city had His court became of such interest that it was broadcast He never fined a traffic v violator money money money mon mon- ey but had a large bottle of Castor Oil and according to the we seriousness seriousness serious serious- ness of the offense would administer administer admin admin- ister one two or three From Denver we crossed th the dreary Eastern Colorado plains and then on to Kansas City and Independence Independence Inde Inde- Independence Mo We took large sight sightseeing sightseeing sightseeing seeing buses which was always our mode of travel after leaving the train and drove through Clay Ray Rny and Jackson counties These spots were so beautiful with trees and green growing things that the immensity immensity im im- irn- irn of the Pioneers sacrifice in leaving that country to come to toa toa toa a desert wasteland was beginning to be realized We Ve were very much su surprised by byi 1 1 r i the fact that none of the church landmarks are owned by us Even the temple sight at Independence belongs to others The large tabernacle of the Reorganized Reorganized Reorganized Re Re- organized church is a huge cumbersome cumbersome cumbersome cum cum- building trying hard to survive They were holding their conference there at that time and thousands of people from all over the world were in attendance Liberty Jail was nothing more than a cold underground room lined lined lin lin- un- un ed with rocks Under the watchful eye of the F. F FBI B. B I. I we took pictures of the home of President Truman and then returned to Kansas City Chicago was not a beautiful city unless viewed from the shores of Lake Michigan The over-crowded over crooked streets and bustling people people peo peo- pie all started to into one unhappy huddle We Ve stayed in Chicago two days visiting all points of interest but the visit to Jane Adams' Adams Hull House in the sl slum wn section left us all with the feeling that the slum areas and all jf of f fOle the Ole crime race riots and disease they breed are Americas America's first and rind foremost responsibility if this nation is to remain free and pros pros- nerous Of course Cleveland was busy with baseball the day we were vere there but Kirtland was restful and quiet with trees and flowers and rolling roiling green hills The Reorganized ed church keeps the Temple in good repair and uses it for a meeting meeting meeting meet meet- ing house Our ride along the shores of Lake Erie was beautiful and Nia- Nia gra Falls viewed from Canada wasa was a n thrill and made one realize how small and insignificant are the at attempts attempts attempts at- at tempts of man to duplicate nature We Ve became more and more aware of that as we traveled to Boston Trees trees trees every place one looked We Ve rode from Boston to Lexington and Concord over 70 miles and the roads and streets were lined on both sides ides with trees Continued on last page I MANY l INTERESTING PLACES ARE SEEN DURING TOUR TO EAST Continued from Pa Page e 1 of every description The people of Sanpete could learn a great lesson lesson les les- son from the East in that respect They cultivate rather than destroy their trees and do everything in their power to preserve them They love and cherish them there A more perfect spot could never be found in hi which to write and that is perhaps why that section produced such great people as Longfellow Emerson Emerson- Louise May Alcott to mention just a 3 few We Ve were ere in their homes which are preserved in perfect condition The last game of the World Series was on in Boston and that was a 3 thrill Also we saw the famous stage play Harvey starring Frank Faye New York City was the climax climme of the tour We Ve saw sawall all that w war possible in three and one half days Rockefeller Center Radio City Music lusic Hall Central Park Fifth Avenue etc The fashions were not extreme there in hi fact the skirts were not as long in New NewYork NewYork w York as in Salt Lake City All o othe of f the hair was cut very short Of course New York is not complete complete complete com com- without several musical comedies comedies com corn edies the Empire State Building the Bowery Harlem and the Statue Statu of Liberty Philadelphia v as interesting We touched the e Liberty Bell saw sav the Betsy Ross Home and were in ir Independence Hall Then Washington D. D C C. and for foi forthe r the first time in days felt as i if f we could stretch and take a dee deep P breath of air as it is s so very muc mud much h like Salt Lake City Mt Vernon Vernor was so peaceful and the beauty othe o othe of f the Washington Jefferson and Lincoln Lincoln Lincoln Lin Lin- coln Memorials was inspiring awe We Ve spent two days sight-seeing sight ii m IJ the Nations Nation's capital Detroit was bitterly cold but i iwas iwas it t was warming to see the beautiful new Fords being completed one on e every minute at River Rouge W Ve e em watched them being assembled fro from m just four wheels to the point where when e ed they could be driven That anthe anc an and d the glass making process was really an education It was very fitting that our tour should end with a visit to Carthage e ee and Nauvoo We stood in humble e silence at the grave of Joseph an anc and Hyrum Smith and visited all o othe oi of f the beautiful ul homes of the Pioneers Pioneer s a mute evidence of a nation nations intolerance and lack of understand understand- ing It would take many more pages page s se to tell completely of our tour The Th e visit to the Hill Cumorah and talking talking talking talk talk- ing to Mr Stott formerly of Manti the Sunday spent in the Sacred Sacre d Grove and the still unspoken resentment re resentment re- re of the people there to toward toward toward to- to ward the Mormons the visit t tc to toDon o Don McNeill's Bre Breakfast Club i ir in n Chicago Fred Waring's t in New York Th The Boston Navy Yard and tour of the Constitution the subway in New York All of this so much a part o othis of f this great nation o 0 |
