C ALDER a teacher in the Manti schools since 1919 was re retired retired retired re- re tired this spring after a total o of 36 years as a aa a classroom instructor Mr Alder began his teaching in Gunnison in 1914 and remained there until coming to Manti ManU in 1919 meaning meaning meaning mean mean- ing he spent all of his teaching years in the South Sanpete School District Agriculture and farm mechanics were the subjects Mr Alder was called on most to teach although h he substituted in many other lines of class work He has has' been prominent prominent prominent pro pro- in F F A work and has been an instructor in this line for 26 continuous years This work did die not stop when school closed as Mr Alder would receive calls from his boys throughout the sum sum- mers He responded to such cans calls with suggestion and directions on the boys' boys Ag g. g projects and othe other r problems and has taken several o ohis ohis of f his classes on cross-country cross trips In his F F A work Mr Alder Aide averaged about 45 boys in his classes each year making his total tota in this work between 1150 and 1200 boys The work and projects inthe inthe in inthe the F F A line were always a grea great interest to Mr Alder and his pupils won many prizes in livestock livestock livestock live live- stock shows through the years In public life Mr Alder serve served as a member r of the city council and has been a member of th the Chamber of Commerce Commercial Commer Commer- cial Club Lions club and lOaF He has served as president of both the Lions and the Commercial club He is a n charter member and still stil stilla a member of the Manti Lions club He served as Grand Master of th the e Manti ManU lOaF and was Sovereign n Grand Representative of the Stat State e of Utah at an Odd Fellows convention convention con con- in Toronto Canada The Th trip to Toronto as a delegate fro from m the me lodges or 01 of me we state 01 ox u titan tan was a highlight in the lives Jives o of f Mr and Mrs Alder and with verv very slight encouragement they will tel telof tellof tell teU of their wonderful trip to the Canadian Canadian Canadian Can Can- adian City In re religious work Mr Alder has ha served as president of the as a member of the Elders' Elders presidency presidency presidency dency in the Sunday School Su Su- Su and for 10 years was wasa a Scoutmaster Mr Alder was just released after alteY serving as a director for the Utah Poultry Farmers Cooperative anc anchas and has served as a director in this organization for 6 years In recent years Mr Alder has instructed classes of Veterans in vocational agriculture and farm form me me- With his retirement Mr Alder is looking forward to doing a bi bit bitof bitof of studying he has been putting off iff ff for many years He has ai an interest in geology which will take him out-of-doors out and of course like any good Ag Teacher he has poultry and livestock of his own Mr and Mrs Alder will continue o 0 make their home in Monti Manti Their children are Jack Alder and andI I Norma Whitlock of oC Salt Lake City and rn Barbra Bagy of rf Detroit f s e. e d f 9 i iY Y n Y 1 i ih t t t r rELLIS rr r A i wi z s. s 1 J M 7 f f 9 Y- Y 74 r w 7 ELLIS E. E JOHNSON who retired this spring after teaching in Manti since 1908 and serving as principal principal principal pal in the Manti school for 39 years something of a record for any teacher Mr Johnson came to Manti in 1908 as an eighth grade teacher following his graduation from the B Y U. U He had had one year of teaching experience at Huntington prior to to Manti In his second year at Manti ManU he was made madeR R assistant to Principal E. E T. T Reid and in his third year became principal of the Elementary school In 1920 Mr Johnson was named principal of the Junior High school and clOd in 1922 was given the reins in inthe inthe inthe the High school where he remained remain remain- ed as principal until 1948 His term as High School principal was interrupted 1 year when he took over as Superintendent of the South Sanpete School District in the ab absence absence absence ab- ab sence of Leland E. E Anderson In his years in the class room Mr Johnson was called on to teach many subjects He He- says with a smile I taught practically practical everything everything everything every every- thing except home economics Most of his teaching time was spent instructing in- in in instructing instructing in- in in social science English and music He served as president of the teachers' teachers association for Manti for Sanpete County and for Southern Utah He served on state and na national national national na- na committees with the U. U E E. A. A and N. N NEA E. E A. A Mr 11 Johnson was head of the state music committee for six years planning music meets and festivals until the High school activities association as association association as- as was organized With the latter group he served as a re representative representative re- re from region 4 and was head of the music committee in inthis inthis inthis this group for 8 years making 14 years he led plans for state music activities Twice during this per per- iod Mr Johnson attended national music conventions as a Utah One of these conventions 1 was was in Cleveland and one in De De- troit Mr Johnson has been director of the Manti choir since 1917 and twice during this period has been honored by having his choir invited to sing at L D S General conference in Salt Lake City For many years he has been stake chorister for the South Sanpete Stake Mr Johnson gives his wife much credit for his success in the music line She is the former Clara Hall daughter of John and Almira Hall and her musical ability has been beena a great boon to him he tells His contributions to community life tife have extended beyond his well- well known music ability He joined the Tanti Commercial club lub in 1909 and belonged to that organization for years vears including 4 years as dent He served for a time as ashead ashead head ead of the Library committee He served as head hend r of a citizens citizen's planning plan plan- ling ning committee which made extensive extensive exten exten- sive ive- sugg suggestions for improving the ity Hy water system He served for m many my years in the residency of the quorum of seventies and in 1926 served a R mission in the Western States In his 26 years as principal of Manti High School Mr Johnson aw about 1000 students graduate I including 6 of his own children As he ends his long service in inthe inthe inthe the Manti ManU schools Mr Johnson looks forward to too continuing hj hi music work with the public and will run his form farm and livestock |
