Show 11V AIR TO LOS ANGELES Thin- is much to contemplate In h:; propos.-d air route for mail and ;ja-;s -users j.-twe.-n Salt Lake City ..ml Los Ansr scheduled for start-inn start-inn July 1 tliis year. It is, in the (irst plafp, one of the most stable. mo?t nearly year-long, and least affected af-fected by the weather routes in the '.'ntir' aviation service as it exists today to-day i nthe United States. Storms hinder the traffic a comparatively large number of (lays a month over the eas. and south, and the mountains moun-tains are en-hrouded with clouds on many days when actual stormy weather wea-ther does not halt the westbound plane:; on th? New York to San Francisco Fran-cisco mail line. Put southwest ward from Sale LMre Pity to Los Angeles, the proposed pro-posed air line i? over a reg'on having hav-ing perhaps the lowest average num ber of stormy days In each month and in the entire year, of any simi-'r simi-'r route in the country. It is almost al-most an all-desert route, and from n. wenthr cor-.s'die-ration, forms one of the most stable and certain airlines air-lines in existence, it is claimed. True, there may be a certain bumpiness over the low mountain ranges and the. superheated desert valleys, but probably no morer than over the variegated var-iegated fields of the east in the summertime. sum-mertime. As to its practicability, there has already for some time been a most successful airplane, passenger service ser-vice in operation between Los Angeles An-geles and Albuquerpue, New Mexico, which is now being extended to the eastward to connect with a cross-continent cross-continent line. This may take care o much of the passenger traffic desiring de-siring to use this sort of transportation transporta-tion into and out of the southwest; but it will not be forgotten that a,s yet airplane passenger service is a novelty and is limited to much shorter short-er hops than across the continent. For this reason the passenger service ser-vice between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City has large possibilities, in comparison with the service in other oth-er sections, per capita. The Utah colony is not only comparatively large in southern California, but the number of people in Idaho, Montana . Wyoming and elsewhere tributary to I Utah, who sojourn in Southern California, Cal-ifornia, or who have friends and relatives rel-atives living there, is large compared with the. total population. Hence, besides the purely business relation-shins relation-shins between the two regions, there is a great deal of plane travel to ana fro annually, from which to draw i airplane passengers. As for the mail express business, this should be important, for the motion mo-tion picture interests alone supply a very large amount of light merchandise mer-chandise for fast transportation, in the way of films, as well as the attending at-tending mail business, requiring unusual un-usual speed. Much of the express may be carried over the shorter route across the southern tier of states ultimately, ul-timately, but the mail line will for the present continue to be through Salt Lake. City. Considering the apparent ap-parent stability, the .safety and the certainty of the service, the new air line holds out much promise; and la l undoubtedly the forerunner of a slm ilar line to the Pacific northwest. A direct l'ne may ultimately be established es-tablished through the southwest I from the cast, hut it prohahly cannot ever be established successfully j through the northern states to the far northwest, in competition with ; 'he present cross-country line thru Salt Lake City. |
