Show CERTIFIED AND PEDIGREED GRIMM ALFALFA SEED In answer to an inquiry made to the State department o agriculture with regard to proximity of common alfalfa to the Grimm in the produo ion of certified Grimm, Mr. Benion, state commissioner of agriculture, has the following to say: "In answering your Questions of May 12th, will say that in considering consider-ing the requirements for certifying of Grimm alfalfa seed,, the question of joining fields with other varieties was discussed and all the information informa-tion obtainable brought to bear on the subject and; finally decided that for certification this wiP not affecc the Grimm seed, neither does it In Idaho, but for pedigreed peed, which we are not attempting to produce this year, Idaho requires a distance of 20 rods. "Certified Grimm is - ordinarily used for planting fiel'.'p to produce hay, while pedigreed seed is especially especial-ly seed plots used to plan to pi-u-1 duce certified seed. We have not accepted ac-cepted fields that have been planted to ordinary alfalfa in the past fou.-years, fou.-years, or that are likely to carry any volunteer al-?.:fa whatsoever. Tne danger is !.oo great a-: oven alfalfa seeds may lay in the ground for years, and with proper germination, uppear in the felds that have been needed to .ilf.'lfa in the past four years." '; will be r-.t.eed that tlv differentiate differ-entiate betw". n 'certifn'.' Primm and 'pedigreed' Grimm. While the pedigreed Grimm will undoubtedly bring the larger price, the market will necessarily be limited and the restrictions so much greater in the production,- that, on the whole, the. certified seed will be the better paying pay-ing crop, especially since the fields of common are scattered over tno greater part of the pumping district. It is imperative that every seed :;rover who proposes to grew certified certi-fied Grimm hold strictly to the rules, otherwise certification caunot bv granted. If you do not know tlui rules you can get a copy from Lew Mar Price, County Agent. Beaver. County Agricultural Agent. |
