Show Beaver County Teams Lose in State Tourney After losing their first game Wednesday Wed-nesday by score of Beaver 21 and Bingham 29; Minersville 13, L. D. S. 18, the Beaver county teams repeated re-peated the second night of the State tournament by losing, Beaver 19, Saliua 28; Minersville 18, Pleasant Grove 27, and both were out of the contest for 1926. , The third night the L. D. S. defeated de-feated the Bingham team b ya score of 23 to 22. And on Saturday, night the last games were played, L. D. S defeating Ogden by one point, thus winning the State championship and the honor of representing Utah al the big tournament to be held in .Chicago next month. Minersville was handicapped in many ways. First, the court where Minersville has practiced, yes learned learn-ed the game, is very small with ,a very low ceiling, while the Deseret gym, where the State tournament was held, the home of the L. D. S. has the largest floor and the highest high-est ceiling in the state. Second, the officials of the game repeatedly called fouls on Minersville Miners-ville besides, in every decision which might have been called close, the decision de-cision was invariably in favor of the L. D. S.. Third, the referee was dressed in a suit which so closely resembled the Minersville uniform that on five different occasions a Minersville player passed the ball to the referee, mistaking him for a Minersville player. play-er. Yet in spite of all this the Beaver county boys held the powerful L. D S. team to the smallest total score i of the day 13 to IS, a total of 31 points. Beaver on the first day was pitted pit-ted against Bingham, one of the crack northern teams. The first half j of the game was all in favor of Bea-' Bea-' ver and it looked like a victory 1 Beaver was far superior in passinp ! but lacked accuracy in landing the ball in basket. The third period end-' end-' ed with the score 19 to 17 In favor ' of Bingham. During the last period Bingham ran up 10 points to Bea-j Bea-j ver's 4. Final score 21 to 29. j Goodwin with 10 points was high man for Beaver. The Salt Lake Telegram reports it as the fastest, best game of the first two days playing. The Minersville-Pleasant Grove game on the second day was a surprise, sur-prise, as Minersville was a favorite, but the heart was all out of the champions of the Millard division because of their hard luck the day before and the game was a listless one, and had it not been for the wonderful playing by the dwarfs . Clair Gillins of Minersville and Christensen of Pleasant Grove, the two smallest men in the tournament the game would not have had a thrill. The Beaver-Salina game started slow and featureless with Beaver a' usual in the lead 10 to 6 at the em' of the half. Then things began u happen with Sallna doing most o' the scoring, coming up from beliind and winning 19 to 28. Goodwin again was high man fot Beaver with 6 points. Beaver appears to be satisfied with their treatment at the tournament The officials seem to have treated them justly. The only complaint they make is that they got beat. NOTES ON THE GAME One noticeable fact was that on five different occasions the Miners ville players made a direct pass to the referee. Evidently his white trousers resembled the Minersville uniform enough to attract the peg. No team which lost the first day had any chance to win a higher place in the tournament than fifth. Perhaps that is why the Salt Lake teams were matched with weak oi unknown teams. , Nothing is more sensational and gratifying than to witness a good guard in action. But many a stellar defense man has been checked in his daring and sensational leaps for the ball coming into the basket by too technical and too loose calling of fouls. The above happened many times against Minersville on the first day. The change from defense to offense of-fense or vice versa is one of the cri-terions cri-terions of good basketball. Ogden, L D. S. and Bingham demonstrated this to a high degree. Their opponents oppon-ents hardly ever got away to a fly i ig s:art. We wonder how it happened that Beaver and Minersville should both have been pitted against two of the strongest teams in the state. The knowing ones had long claimod that L. D. S., Ogden, Bingham, Prove and Uinta were the strong teams of the state. We wonder again, why some' of the strong teams were not pitted against each other. L. D. S. U. had the toughest opponent op-ponent for the opening night since she entered tourney play. The Saints had a tight five-man defense in the first quarter, but Min ersville solved the style and worked to the hoop repeatedly, but to no avail. Minersville simply could not shoot baskets. Fans wonder why Minersville shot at the backboards like at rifle prac tice. They play in a low-ceiling gym and cannot loop their shots. Their shooting has to be absolutely acour ate at this style, most unorthodox to register. A |
