According to the census of 1920 there are 6,2 01 illiterate persons ten years of age and over in the state of Utah, "illiterate' meaning, unable to write in any language. lan-guage. Of this number. 535 are native na-tive whites of native parentage, 390 are of foreign or mixed parentage. and 3,504 are of foreign birth, 1,-249 1,-249 are Indians, 59 are negroes and the remainder 527; are Chinese or Japanese or other Asiatics. In the total population ten years of age and over the percentage of illiteracy is 1.9, which shows a decrease since 1910, when it was 2.5. There is more illiteracy in the rural ru-ral districts of the state than in the cities, the percentage being 2.5 for the rural population and 1.3 for urban. For the native white population popu-lation of native parentage the urban percentago of illiteracy is 0.3 while the rural is 0.4. By counties, the percentage of il-- il-- literacy ranges from 26.9 in Can Juan county to 0.4 in Rich and Way-no Way-no counties. |
