A demand for the impeachment im-peachment of William II. Taft, chief justice of the United States, for ur-cepting ur-cepting an alleged annuity of $10,000 from the Carnegie corporation and an attack on the Lenine and Trotzky brand of Russian communism by Alexander Al-exander Cahan, editor of the Jewish Daily Forward, featured the opening of the national convention of the Socialist So-cialist party Saturday. Mr. Cahan declared de-clared in on address that Trotzky was a "big bombastic wingbad," but he believed he was sincere, and that Le-nine's Le-nine's physical breakdown was due in great part to bis morol incapacity. The resolution aimed at Chief Justice Jus-tice Taft was adopted unanimously, but none of the delegates expressed views on the subject. Trie text of the vesolution read : "Whereas, William Howard Taft, chief justice of the United States supreme su-preme court, for many years has been, in receipt of an annuity of $10,000 from the Carnegie corporation, which was undoubtedly granteil in recognition recogni-tion of services rendered, and "Whereas, Said William Howard Taft has continued to accept said annuity an-nuity since his appointment to the supreme court of the United States, and "Whereas, The acceptance of his annuity coming indirectly from the steel trust, the most powerful corporation cor-poration in the United States, Is not only unethical but a menace to the integrity of our courts and detrimetal to the best interests of the American people ; therefore be it "Resolved, By the national executive execu-tive committee of the Socialist party that we voice our protest against the continuance of William Howard Taft in his high office and demand that congress take steps to secure his resignation or impeachment. |
