Show The Tariff in A Nutshell Lowering our present tariffs would not help the farmer because he is now paying no tariff on most commodities commoditi-es used exclusively by himself. It would hurt him both directly and indirectly. in-directly. Indirectly because his great home market for provisions sold to American workmen would be injured, and directly because he would face competition in his home market from foreign countries, whichj on account of cheap labor and lower standards of living, could lay their products on our shores more cheaply than the American farmer can produce the same product. |
