Show WHY RUN SUCH RISKS Insurance engineers recently visited visit-ed a prosperous manufacturing town of 2000 inhabitants in Oregon and from the fire risk standpoint this is what they found. Insufficient water pressure, lack of hydrants near school buildings, insufficient in-sufficient fire equipment, absence of fire prevention regulations, 4 7 places plac-es where wiring was defective, 28 places where walls and floors were unprotected from stove heat, 14 places plac-es where gasoline was improperly kept, 15 places without metal cans for oily waste and rags, 13 places with defective stoves, pipes and flues 8 places where ashes were found in wooden recepticals, 41 places where chimneys were on brackets and 38 places with accumulation of rubbish and trash. This is typical of conditions in hundreds of places. It is such condi tions as this that insurance rating bu reaus and engineers are trying to correct. cor-rect. Public co-operation would go a long way toward reducing fire losses of life and property. A town like this could be wiped out in two hours. |
