Show Community Prosperity Depends Upon Keeping Money at Home Utah has caught the spirit ! Utah now knows that her community prosperity pros-perity depends almost entirely on how near home Utah money is kept ! A few weeks ago when the campaign In the interest of Utah-made goods was, inaugurated, by the Utah Munu lacturers 'Association, big thinjnTwere expected, but it was hardly thought that the enterprising people of the slate would take hold of this important import-ant matter with the vim and vigor that are everywhere in evidence. Utah is apparently aroused to the fact that if this state is to lie built up as a commonwealth of great commercial com-mercial importance, it must be done with Utah money. It is now evident that if Utah money is more interested In developing the business of Illinois, New York, and other eastern stntes, our own home state will suffer immeasurably. im-measurably. It is important to note, however, that even with the effort put forth on every side right now and the great improvements recently mads enough money is needlessly leaving Utah every year to build a great city cr to keep hundreds of factories busy night and day. "If my observation is correct." said Secretary Farley of the Utah Manu facturers Association recently, "Utah people are just as far-seeing as the people of California, Colorado, Illinois Illin-ois or any other progressive state. Although some are a little thoughtless most of our people realize that home enterprises furnish the very life's . liluod of every commonwealth. The spending of an American dollar achieves its maximum effectiveness in community building only when that spending takes place very close to where It was earned. "Utah roads would naturally be poor and Utah communities almost impoverished impover-ished if the bulk of Utah's wages and other sources of income were sent to pay the taxes and build up the cities of Illinois. Of course these good people peo-ple in the east would be very much obliged to Utah for her magnanimity, but in their quiet movements they would smile a meaningful smile. "No, I' feel positively certain that Utah is going to stand whole-heartedly by her own people and by her own industrial enterprises not because of sentiment either, but because it la common sense to do It." The way things are moving with tna campaign in the interest of Utah products pro-ducts it appears that Major Earlaj H exactly right. |
