Show WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS A few voary aro, opponents of chain stores were stumping stump-ing tht; country for special chain store tax laws. They feared that the progressive merchandising innovations of the chains would ruin independent merchants. More than 20 states enacted laws limiting the efficiency of chain stores, thus forcing higher prices on necessities. Many of those laws tre still operative at the same time when presumably evi'ry thing is being done to stem rising prices. Actually, under the stimulation of competition, both types of retailing prospered and finally developed into an integrated distribution system, the like of which the world has never seen for competence and efficiency. Moth chain and independent merchants have turned every ounce of organizational ability and efficiency toward beating a common enemy inflation. They have united in a battle to halt the rising cost of living. They work tirelessly for nano government controls over civilian necessities. And where rationing and price ceilings have been imposed, they have done a superhuman job of practical administration. The war emergency has cleverly proven that this country needs every type of retail distributor. No type of store should be handicapped by punitive laws. |
