We voted for a committee com-mittee to do the ibuying. Chris Xolan. Spending Our Money ' We had three dollars. We got themoney from the P.-T. A. We lioueht two balLs, two games and a jumping rope. They cost $1.40. We have $1.00 left. i FIRST and SECOND GRADE j We h;ive been learning about woodpeckers. We have learned , about the red-hearer woodpecker,! about the red-headed woodpecker, woodpecker and flicker. Wood-; peckers are tree doctors. They) live in holes in trees. They eat worms and bugs. Charles Baxter. j I THIRD GRADE Doctor Kohler gave us a tooth examination Wednesday, April 28. He had some alcohol in a tin cup and he had something in the cup. He took two of these things and had us open our mouths. Then he put the things in our mouth to find the cavities. My teeth were O. K. Eugene Johnson. Today we studied about the submarine. They are used for war. When they submerge they let so much water in the tanks to take them down. If they go too far the pressure of the water would crush it. So they go down only 200 feet. Dorothy Campeau. We are playing cops and robbers. rob-bers. We have guns. I have a gun and a place to put it. We choose the (boys to be on the cops side. I am on the robbers side. Some of us have two gune. We run from the other gang and then we sneak up on them. Arthur-Johnson. Arthur-Johnson. There was a girl here and she was giving- gum away to the boys and girls for samples. The teacher teach-er let us chew gum in school. Leonard Baum. FOURTH GRADE We are studying about Pioneers. They are very interesting. We are making a quilt and a rug. I km on the rug committee. The boys are making little log cabins and a big covered wagon. They are very nice. We are getting along fine. Anna Mae Grimshaw. We are building a covered wagon. The hoys that are making it are Max Singleton. Charles At-kin, At-kin, Ross Cottrell, George Morris, Bobby Young and Charles Smith. Charles Smith. The Pioneers The Pioneers left their winter quarters, on the Missouri river, on April 7, 1847. Two Scouts, Orson Pratt and Erastus Snow, came down Emigration canyon on July 21, then they went back and brought the advance party of 23 wagons and 43 men. These 43 men planted the first crops while waiting wait-ing for the rest of the people who came on the 24th. They broke their plow while trying to turn the hard soil. They made the water from the creek spread over the lands. This started the first irrigation. irri-gation. The Donner party's trail saved the Pioneers much work and time going down Emigration canyon. can-yon. The first people camped on the land where the city and county building stands in Salt Lake. In August, 1947, the Pioneers went out to ibring Pioneers who were or. their way. In September, 1848, 2.500 more people came with much live stock. From that time on many thousands arrived in Utah. Bobby Young. The Mormon Battalion Captain Allen called upon the Pioneers while they were in Council Coun-cil Bluffs for 500 men to fight Mexico for the states of Utah, Colorado. Nevada, California, Idaho, Ida-ho, New Mexico and Arizona. He got 500 men and started back. They left Council Bluffs in 1846. They were going to San Diego, California. They had to make trails as well as fight. They went through New. Mexico and Colorado. While they were on their journey they suffered a few days for want of water, and they went miles before be-fore they got water. They had to dig their'fewn water. They suffered from December 18th to the 25th. They reached San Diego January 24. 1S47. Thev were released July in, 1847. The United States won the war. Betty Ruth Campeau. Cam-peau. FIFTH GRADE Florida In school the fifth grade was studying Florida. We learned how the L'nited States got Florida and how much it cost. Then we gathered in committees. The committee com-mittee I was in was No. 5 and I the best pictures, stories and had the best pictures, stories and maps. The stories were read to the class and the maps and pictures pic-tures were shown to all. We completed com-pleted the studv Fridav. Alvin Holm. Daniel Boone April 30th our school went to a show called "Daniel Boone". We went at 2:25 p.m. It was interesting interest-ing as we had studied about Daniel Boone in our school studies. Dorothy Weber. Our New Curtains The other day I came in and my friend asked nie if I could see anything any-thing different in the room. I looked all around the room and I saw something green. Can you guess what I saw? I saw on the windows some curtains. They were very pretty. These are who made them, Bertha, Betty, Mae, Masuko. Shirley and Anna. Ilene Welch. Yesterday the Dentyne company sent some people to our school and had us line up. A pretty girl in a uniform gave each of us a package of Dentyne gum. She said, "Chew Dentyne, it makes your teeth snow white." Then she went on to give other children a package. We thanked her. .Shirley Jean Post. SIXTH GRADE Doctor Kohler, the dentist, came up to our school and examined examin-ed our teeth. There were eight in our room with O. K. teeth. Many boys and girls have teeth that need to be cared for. Leland Jones. This week the high school woodwork wood-work boys made a book stand for our grade. They also made one to put in the office. We can put our magazines "National Geographic", Geograp-hic", "American Girl", "American Boy", etc., in them. They make our room look much nicer. Harold Beard. I Thursday, April 30, a very nice young man came tip to our school . and told Mr. Heslington to have I all the children line up on the north side of the .building. The sixth , grade girls were playing ball so I were the first ones there. When all the "kids" were lined up a , beautiful young lady, dressed in a : red and white costume got out of i the car and went down the line ; giving each child a stick of Dentyne Den-tyne chewing gum.
