Show flYvESTOC SITUATION seen at the jees Union fto 'a'' Los Angeles Uflion Stock Yard, April 13. 'Broad demand for beef cattle and hogs features the livestock live-stock markets. Prices of hogs reached the highest levels since 1926 when the top price advanced to $15.25 on the Los Angeles market mar-ket last week, and steers at $13.25 equaled the highest levels of the year. There is talk in the trade that the time is not far distant when price ceilings may be established estab-lished on beef cuts, just as was done in the case of pork prices early in March. Buyers were apparently in urgent ur-gent need of all grades and classes class-es of cattle on the Los Angeles market and, while receipts are considerable beyond a year ago, demand is still much greater than available supplies on the market. , The sharp advances in cattle , prices at middle western markets are being watched with interest on the Pacific coast. To some de-: de-: gree, the higher markets on the ( Missouri river undoubtedly have . attracted fed steers which other-jwise other-jwise might have been moved : westward. i All grades and classes of cattle cat-tle met very active demand last , week at the Los Angeles Union Stock yards. Medium to good steers out of feedlots are selling mainly at $11.50 to $13.25 and the common and medium grades of steers of Mexican origin are bringing bring-ing $10.50 to $11 a cwt. Very few native steers carrying any ; degree of meat covering are sell- ing below $11.00 and some cattle i which ordinarily would be going 'to feedlots are going into im--. mediate slaughter channels. There , were a few loads" of feeder steers sold last week at $10.50 to $11.25 ( a cwt. j Grass cows make up the bulk of j receipts in that division and are selling mainly at $8.50 to $9.75, j some lots going as high as $10. Recent rains have improved grass (feed in southern California, but it I is generally believed that rains have come too late to materially . affect the movement of grass cat-j cat-j tie this season. Canners and I cutters met active call at $6.50 to l $8.25 for the bulk. Fleshy dairy cows are bringing $7.50 to $8.50 and as high as $9.00 a cwt. The hog market continues in j firm position with the extreme top last week at $15.25 and the l bulk of 170- to 240-pound good land cjioice hogs at $14.50 to $15. I Sows are selling at $12 to $13 a I cwt. i The fat lamb market fails to I show much action and the market ' is just about steady with good ' and choice spring lambs quoted at I $11.50 to $11.75, possibly as high as $12. Medium spring lambs are j selling down to $10.75 and under. |
