Show Rulings Given On . Overseas Mailings The four-week period from September Sep-tember 15, through October 15, has been designated as the time during which all Christmas mail should be posted for marine corps personnel on overseas duty. Arrangements Ar-rangements have been made with the post office department for special handling of Christmas letters and packages mailed during dur-ing this period in order to get them to men overseas before the holidays. To facilitate this effort, senders send-ers are requested to mark their packages "Christmas parcel" and to pay special attention to the addressing ad-dressing and packaging requirements. require-ments. Hundreds of packages are lost daily because senders do not wrap them strongly enough to withstand the handling through numerous postal centers and the heat of a ship's hold. For the purpose of Christmas mail, the term "overseas" personnel person-nel means men who receive their mail through a fleet post office at San Francisco, California; New York, New York; or Seattle. Washington. Letters and parcels should contain the name and address ad-dress of sender, the name, rank or rating of addressee and the unit to which he is assigned, or name of ship or fleet post office through which the mail is to be routed. Under postal regulations Christmas Christ-mas parcels shall net exceed five pounds in weight, or 15 inches in length or 36 inches in length and girth combined. Not more than one parcel will be ace pt-d in any one week from thc same sender for the same addressee. All articles should ho packed in metal-wooden metal-wooden or solid fiberboard. or strong doublefaced corrugated fiberboard or strong fully telescoping tele-scoping card'ooard boxes. F'.;er-board F'.;er-board or cardboard boxes must be securely wrapped in strong paper and tied with twine. In additi-n. senders are cautioned that d'-lays caused by the necessity for censorship cen-sorship will be' minin-.i7.ed if the wrapping is secured so as to permit per-mit easy inspection of contents. Parcels should not include any weapons, parishahles, rr.toxie-ar.t ., poisons, or inflammable artich -s such as matches or lighter fluid. In general, the public is urged not to send food or cbthir.g. Men overseas are amply provided with br.th, so shipping space for gift' should be used for other purposes. Mail for marine rorps pern-nel pern-nel may be insured or registered by the sender. These regulations apply also to men in the navy and con it guard. |
