Show Washington Comment The press of Washington is in- , tensely proud of the fact that one of its most brilliant and representative represen-tative members has pust been appointed ap-pointed director of publicity for the Republican national committee. This is the one and only Franklyn Watlman jr., who has achieved such a reputation for himself in a tri-weekly column entitled ."Politics ."Poli-tics and People" on the Washington Washing-ton Pos.t. J.thn Hamilton, chairman chair-man of the Republican National committee, announces that under Mr. Waltman's direction, the publicity publi-city division will ibe reorganized and revitalized just at this criti- .cal .time when the party is moving into the first stages of the 193b and 1940 campaigns. It should be interesting, in view of the committee's commit-tee's new acquisition, to repeat a bit of Mr. Waltman's comment in his "Political Potpourri" for The Post, on the recent sharp defeat of .the administration by way ot , the ill-starred reorganization bill which went down for the count in .the house last week. Mr. Waltman calls it "the most significant development de-velopment of the year in American Ameri-can politics. . . without doubt, it is the most stunning blow yef given to the Roosewllt administration. adminis-tration. . . far more disastrous to new deal prestige than the supreme count bill defeat because this year the administration fought harder and because it he legislation was not so dangerous as Ithe pr.o-ptsed pr.o-ptsed reorganization of. the judi- . ciary. . . the administration forces were defeatefl after using every resource possible. . . . including the pap and patronage contained in .'.he promise -of a suddenly conceived con-ceived and announced $4,250,000,-000 $4,250,000,-000 public works and relief program. pro-gram. Mr. Roosevtelt may now well say, "Neither can the House be purchased!" |
