Commander Van Zandt will be accompanied on his visit by Dr. W. G. Preston of Logan, state commander of the Utah department. depart-ment. The arrival of Commander Van Zandt at Beaver will be the signal for a grand parade and music by the Beaver high school band, with a half-holiday proclaimed in Beaver Bea-ver in recognition of the importance import-ance of the occasion. The public meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and an interesting program is planned in conjunction with the talk to be delivered by the distinguished guest of honor. In the evening a big dance will be given in the commodious Legion Le-gion hall, which is expected to be taxed to the limit to handle the large crowd of people representing the four counties. Commander Van Zandt made an official visit to Utah a short time ago but he failed to visit southern Utah at that time and the visit next week is largely due to the vehement protest registered by Commander J. S. Rickerson of Escalante Post No. 1546 of Milford, and others who were not disposed to consider lightly the ignoring of one of the most active posts of the state. Commander Van Zandt is a resident resi-dent of Altoona, Pennsylvania, and entered the United States navy in April, 1917, when a senior in high school. As signalman on board various merchant marine ships he made 12 roundtrips across the Atlantic At-lantic under the supervision of the U. S. armed guard. Active in sports since boyhood, he has held numerous A. A. U. championships and represented the navy as a trainer in the 1924 Olympics at Paris. He has also been active in Boy Scout work. He served as post commander, department commander, com-mander, national chief of staff, and junior and senior vice commander-in-chief, before his elevation eleva-tion to the highest office within the organization in 1933, his forceful force-ful leadership during 1933-34 resulting re-sulting in his unanimous re-elec- (Continued on last page) Commander Coming (Continued .from first page) tion as commander-in-chief for the present term. Starting with the Pennsylvania railroad a? an apprentice ap-prentice and serving in all a" branches of railroading, the dis-tinguished dis-tinguished visitor is now a special representative of the passenger traffic department of that road. |
