Show Golden Reef Produced Ore Sixty Years Ago The Gold. Reef mine, located on the northeastern north-eastern slopes of the San Francisco mountain range 20 miles west of Milford, has been a god-lead producer for more than 60 .years. The elevation of the tunnel in the early workings is about 7750 feet. In July, 1909, a tunnel was driven into the mountain for about 1S00 feet, with a shaft sunk later to the 200-foot level. The first carload of ore was shipped from the Golden Reef in 1909. The mine is located near the fault that determines the eastern boundary of the San Francisco mountain block. West of the fault are the sedimentary rocks and east of it are the volcanic rocks. The sediments comprise interbedded shales, calcareous shales, and fine quartzites at the base, overlain over-lain by massive white quartzite several hundred hun-dred feet in thickness, a series of shaly slates 40 to 60 feet thick, and the massive pink quartzite that forms the upper part of the range. The base of the range is buried in quartzite float coming from the higher slopes. Operated at present under lease b- George L. Dunn, the mine is producing a "$630 net" car of ore weekly, with prospects of much richer ore as old levels are reopened and production is stepped up. Three new bunk houses, a mess hall and hoist house have been built at the Golden Reef, with a .new hoist, compressor and other equipment being added underground, and the entire 150-foot tunnel has been re-tracked re-tracked and retimbered. As soon as weather weath-er permits, sufficient cabins will be built to house a swing-shift crew which Mr. Dunn plans to employ as soon as experienced miners become available. Before beginning operations at the R.eef, Mr. Dunn constructed nine miles of road from Highway 21 to the mine, giving him an allweatlner truck road from the mine to th e loading ramp at the Union Pacific freight yards in Milford. Shortly after operations were begun, but not before exploration and planning of future development for the lower levels was completed, the old shaft caved in.
