Show Hunter Is Killed Instantly Sunday By His Own Gun Alfred Christian "Skelly" Johansen, Jo-hansen, 4G, wellknown Milford farmer far-mer and miner, was instantly killed Sunday afternoon when his gun accidently discharged while hunting hunt-ing deer in the vicinity of Battle mountain, northeast of Milford. The accident occurred about 3:30 o'clock, only a short time after he and his . son Jay, 16 years of age, had arrived in the vicinity and, m cooperation with other local men, had planned the afternoon's hunting. hunt-ing. W. B. Gardner was probably the last person, except his son, to talk to the doomed man, but J. S. Rickerson was the first to reach the scene of the accident after hearing- the frantic cries of the boy. Mr. Johansen had climbed a steep hillside and his gun, a .30-.30 rifle, apparently had slipped from his left hand, the hammer striking a rock, as he rested with his left hand caught in his belt, a characteristic charac-teristic pose of the unfortunate man. The third finger of his left hand was severed and the palm of the hand lacerated.' Striking his belt and severing it, the bullet appeared ap-peared to have been deflected toward to-ward his body, entering the lower abdomen and ranging- upward to the heart. The body was brought off the mountain with considerable difficulty diffi-culty and after some delay, due to misunderstanding as to its removal remov-al from the scene of the accident. Reaching town the body was cared for by representatives of the Southern Sou-thern Utah funeral home. A coroner's cor-oner's inquest was held Monday morning before Justice of the 'Peace James F. Glenn, with V. Wfiddoups, C. E. Leech arid Frank Osborne serving as jurors. The verdict was that death was due to the accidental discharge of the victim's gun. Funeral services are being held Thursday afternoon in the local L. D. S. ward chapel after awaiting await-ing the arrival from Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas of the oldest son, Dean, who volunteered for army service two years ago. Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Johansen, aged parents of the deceased, and brothers also are expected to arrive by Thursday Thurs-day from Oakland, California, where they now live. Mr. Johansen was a native of Frisco and leaves his widow and five children, in addition to parents, par-ents, five brothers, two sisters and innumerable friends, to mourn his untimely passing. A report of the funeral services and obituary will be given next week. |
