Show ! UVESTOCK NOUS ! Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, June8 Livestock markets have been maintained on a very stable basis during the past week, Daily receipts at the Los Angeles Union Stock yards have been ab- sorbed readily each day, with the better grades in urgent demand and a rather slow and narrow outlet out-let for some of the common and inferior grades of steers and cows. However, there is very little if any change in quotations as compared com-pared with earlier in the month, j Hog , prices are slightly lower as packers had to adjust prices of live hogs to bring the live animals more in line with ceiling prices on primary cuts. Sheep and lamb prices are steady with firm demand. de-mand. The government's unprecedented unprecedent-ed order calling for eeMing prices on wholesale and retail prices of beef cuts has tended to slow up trade slightly but on the whole demand in the cattle market has held very good and necessary adjustments ad-justments made with a minimum of confusion. However, the meat trade has been materially affected. affect-ed. As was expected, when hot weather came, the demand for the so-called "economy" cuts of beef mostly from the forequarters dropped . off sharply, while there was a much greater call for steaks and roasts from the loin and hindquarters. Under ordinary conditions, this situation would have been met by making price concessions on the forequarters and increasing the prices of loins, ribs and hinds. Under the price ceilings, it isn't possible to raise price on the cuts most in demand, so packers say that if they move the economy cuts it must be done by lowering prices, getting less for the carcass. It is possible that advertising by the American Meat institute and educational work by the National Na-tional Livestock and Meat board may help to keep in balance the demand for all primary meat cuts through the different seasons of the year but, as a general thing, consumers for generations have been buying steaks and chops at premium prices in hot weather, and have been willing to take the cuts which require more time in cooking only at substantial price discounts. . The theory of ceiling prices on wholesale and retail cuts of beef isn't working out too well in actual practice and some weakness weak-ness in the cattle market in hot weather may result, unless housewives house-wives can be prevailed upon to change their hot weather cooking habits. Actual sales at the Los Angeles Union Stock yards during the past week show medium to good steers selling at $11.60 to $13.75i common and medium steers $10 to $11.50; good heifers $12 to $13; common and medium heifers $9.50 to $11.50; bulk of range cows $8 to $9.60 with some up to $10 a j cwt.; canners and cutters $6 to $7.75; bulls $9.50 to $10.75. Native veal calves are in better demand with the bvlk at $12 to $14, choice up to $15 a cwt. Top hogs were quoted at $15 and choice lambs to $13.50. v |
