Show OjYvESTOC TSITUATION ' M a seen at the Losffuqeks Union ftockljards Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, June 21 Livestock markets have been featured by a very cautious attitude on the part of buyers who are uncertain as to the workings of government subsidy payments, and uncertain as to effects on the meat trade of higher point rations on certain meats combined with continued efforts of government, agencies to "roll back" meat prices. Toward the close of last week, after cattle prices had declined de-clined unevenly, improved demand became apparent and a more healthy situation developed with in the trade. With exception of the fat lamb market, all livestock prices are sharply lower than two months ago but are still slightly higher than prices prevailing early .last fall. Uncertainty of future government actions has put a damper on the demand for feeder cattle, and of course, actual shortages short-ages of high protein feeds cause feedlot finishers to proceed with great caution. It becomes more and more apparent to everyone in . the livestock and meat trade that leadership in government policies must eventually go into the haiitls of experienced men, with sympathetic sympa-thetic understanding of complex livestock and meat production and distribution problems. iStrictly good and choice cattle are becoming scarcer each month. Only a few loads of good quality fed steers reached the Los Angeles market last week and these met fairly active outlet at $15.25 to $15.75. Common and medium grass steers late in the i week made $12.25 to $14, common and medium cows $9 to $11.75 with some good cows to $12.75 and $13; canner and cutter cows $6.50 to $8.50; bulls $10.50 to $12.50; native vealers largely $14 jto $16, cull and common calves S9.00 to $11.00. I Hogs are in active demand at ' (Continued on last page) LIVESTOCK MOTES (Continued from first cage) prices which, on a Chicago basis, are now down very near the minimum mini-mum guaranteed hog feeders by the government. Top on the Los Angeles market late last week was $15.35, bulk of good and choice 190- to 245-pound hogs $15 to $15.35, sows mostly $13.50 to $13.85. Good and choice spring lambs are quoted at steady prices- or $15 to $15.50. Medium to good ewes, carrying No. 2 pelts, brought $6.50 to $6.65. v |
