Show Intramural History Brought to Light By ROD HEATH Back in 1927 when baseball was dropped as an intercollegiate intercollegiate inter inter- I collegiate sport Mr A A. F. F Robbins got the idea of opening the sport to groups This was the first organized in intramural intramural intramural in- in competition at the University of Utah That year basketball was also started among the various groups and the total number of men participating was J 00 From then on there was a gradual gradual gradual grad grad- ual growth under th the direction of Mr Robbins up to 1935 when the program consisted of basketball swimming free throwing wrestling wrestling wrestling wrest wrest- ling handball golf track and andfield andfield andfield field horseshoes tennis and base base- ball That year there were 1500 individual entries in th the combined sports The school year of 35 1934 saw the first year all-year winner which went to the Sigma Pis with Lad Larry Lary and his gang compiling ing the most points in all sports In 36 1935 the winners were the R. R 0 O. T. T C. C boys under the able leadership of Captain Schwartz who along with Mr 1 Robbing has been one of the big pushers for in- in In and in 38 1937 the Sigma Nus were the first to win for any two years Under Under Under Un Un- der Floyd Glauser and with the help of such athletes as Dave Pingree Pingree Pingree Pin- Pin gree Jack Murphy Bob Trout Rog Snow and Frank little little little lit lit- tle trouble was had with existing competition Last year the year all title went to the Pi Kappa Alphas who had such men as Loftis Sheffield Wendell Wendell Wendell Wen Wen- dell Paxton Paul Snow Pete Glade Les Hewlett and Hyde Heath under their colors |
