Show Schools of University sity Boast High Rating B By PHYLLIS DAVIS Lower Lover Division It was just eleven years ago that the lower division of the university university uni uni- was started Before that time the work of this division was r done in various manners In the early history of the institution institution institution the number of students was small and it was usually the President who directed entering students into their fields of study Following the World War Tar there was an influx of new students which made necessary a new system tern tem of a advice vice to entrants The president the president emeritus and an elderly professor were assigned assigned assigned as as- signed this duty But these three men found their task becoming mammoth Time allowed al allowed allowed al- al lowed but short interviews and 1 work be- be most of this guidance was haphazard After thus choos choosing ng their schools students were expected to finish the full year four-year course and many students students students stu stu- dents left school before the end of their sophomore years Then in 1931 the lower divis division on was organized into which all freshmen freshmen freshmen fresh fresh- men sophomores and students were registered This enabled students to explore the various schools under the direction direction direction tion of advisors and also gave students students students stu stu- dents a n more rounded education in the ideal of greater socialization and less among colleges in Ameri America Dean LeRoy E. E Cowles heads the lower division School I of Arts and Sciences The early history of the entire university is in the history of the school of arts and science On November 11 11 1850 in the home of John R. R Park the University University University sity of Deseret was founded but this effort was unsuccessful and it was not until 18 years later that higher education took a firm finn foothold foothold foothold foot foot- hold in the city Dr Park headed this faculty which consisted of often often often ten men Their specific aim was a liberal university and with them were established some of the first liberal arts schools in the country That arts and sciences were preferred preferred pre pre- in this first university is shown by the statement in the first catalogue stating that the university was f for or the furtherance of thinking and for the gaining of knowledge in all subjects and consi con con- si James L. H Lear Leary who is on leave of absence I School of Education When the re-established re University University University sity of Deseret opened in 1869 one of its major problems was training teachers to educate the children in inthe inthe inthe the new territory Dr Park himself himself himself him him- self did most of this academic training and teachers were we're direct products of his plan At that time there was a two- two year ear normal course for teachers with a model morel school run in connection connection connection tion with it It was through the efforts of such educators that Utah has established and maintained maintained maintained main main- I a high standard among other states as these teachers were sent out into the sparsely populated areas enabling evel everyone one to learn the fundamentals of learning I The formal history of the school of education began in 1888 when William Villiam M. M Stewart was appointed principal of the normal department Five years ears later after the University University University sity of Deseret Deser t had been re-named re the University of Utah this de department department department de- de was changed to the normal normal normal nor nor- mal school at the same time that the mining school was originated In 1913 14 the state normal school became the school of education education education edu edu- cation and the head of the school was called the dean Under the guidance of Dean Milton Milton Milton Mil Mil- ton 0 O. Bennion the school of education education education edu edu- cation has gained an A rating in the American Association of Teachers and Colleges and is a member of the National Association Association Association tion of Colleges and Departments of Education School of Social Work Since early February the university university university sity has boasted the only accredited school of social work in the mountain mountain mountain moun moun- tain area Utah is one of but ten State universities in the United I States that has an accredited rating The school of Social V Work ork was established in 1937 to take care of the speedily growing need for highly trained administrators to distribute the millions now spent for social work At present the school is in an embryonic stage and the features of it are being perfected and elaborated orated The school is listed in the current issue of Survey Mid- Mid Monthly as being a school of one of the leading universities and colleges colleges colleges col col- col- col leges where social work is taught There here is a complicated series of requirements necessary for admittance admittance admittance admit admit- tance to the Association of Schools of Social Work The chief of these requirements are the offering of one or two years of professional I work leading to a degree an adequate adequate adequate ade ade- quate budget a competent staff with authoritative experience as well as preparation preparation preparation tion and an adequate agency up tie-up to provide field work Dr Arthur L. L Beele Beeley dean of the predicts great advancement advancement advancement advance advance- ment for the study as a whole system system system tem and for the school in the University University University Uni Uni- especially Every Everyone one of the schools school's graduates last year have been absorbed into the national organizations organizations organizations or or- carrying on social work Extension Division The Extension Division was the outgrowth of a crying demand for more education made by men and women throughout the state and lectures by professors were the first ex exi work sent out First evening lectures were given in 1910 and in 1912 the first formal formal formal for for- mal extension classes classe's classes were inaugurated Frederick William Reynolds Reynolds Rey Rey- Reynolds was appointed director of the division The success and popularity of this work was so great that in 1916 the extension div division sion was made a 3 a. a school of the university Since its beginning it has used the most modern methods of teaching teaching teaching teach teach- ing among them being assistance in school testing programs and anet teaching through the radio and motion picture I.
