Show SOWING TWO POUNDS TO ACRE Practical Dry Farmer, Operating Near Lethbrldge, Alberta. Haa Sur prialng Alfalfa Stand. That alfalfa wJl grow prolific on awdlng of only two poundi to the acre la the opinion of L. A. FdKer, a practical prac-tical dry-farmer operating a very large acreage eight mllea aouth of Lethbrldge, Leth-brldge, Alberta. The uae of this sur prlwlngly small quantity of seed Is In marked contrast to the opinions of many experts who have been making a study of alfalfa for many years. In that opinions as to the quantity of seed to be sown have varied froa 13 to 20 pounds to the acre. Mr. F'elger has an excellent stand of 12 acrra, which was seeded wiih only four pounds to the acre in May. 1911, on fall plowlriR that had been cropped j the year before. Ills plowing was j done to a depth of fiv and a half to six Inches, and he believes thst If h hud plowed deeper he would have required re-quired lens sed. Ills seed bed was well prepared and he used a two-horse cultivator four times, and harrowed early In the spring. He Inoculated th soil with soli from a neighboring al- j ful fa field, and despite the fact that It ! was a severe winter he noted no loss j through winter killing. He expects his field will yield two and possibly ! three cuttings, but he plans to up a ! portion of the field In raising seed. To prove th success of his theory i of planting In rows and using only a small quantity of seed to secure a j good stand, Mr. Felger has sent to ths Lethbrldge headquarters of the International Inter-national Dry-Farming congress a sample dug up on May 22, which shows a 15 Inch stand and a root system sys-tem of Sl'i Inches before 'It was cut off with a knife, and It Is plainly shown that the root was still longer. "I am going to seed only two pounds to the acre next year," says Mr. Felger. Fel-ger. "I find that four pounds makes too thick a stand, and I am going to slop up all the holes of my drill except two and thus reduce the amount ol seed UHcd, and at the same time mix my seed with ground feed. 1 sowed some alfalfa where I used every holn of the drill and It required 13 pounds to the acre. This stand was altogether too thick and not as good In Its first growth as the field of 12 acres which I sowed w ith only four pounds " |
