He took It down, carefully removed aotne of the soot with which It was covered, and made out part of on Inscription. What be found Interested him so much that he bought the old pan. When It was properly cleaned, It waa found to benr tho anna of France and Navarro, surrounded by the chain of Ht, Lout and the cord of the Order or Saint lisprtt. and this Inscription as well: "Here Ilea the magnificent I'rlnco, King Louis XIV., king of France and Navarre, llequlcscat In pace." It was the plate that bad been fastened fast-ened to the coltln of Louis XIV. When the burial vaults of the royal family In the populace of 1793, It had been wrenched from the coffin, fitted with a handle, and turned Into a frying pan. Tho relic may now be seen In the Cluny museum. The handle has been removed, but three holes show where It was attached. |
