Show r Do We Need Changes The January issue of a periodical called What U the Colleges Colleges Col Col- leges are Doing contains an all article entitled Treat em I Rough in which the writer offers the following ving suggestions I I which have come conic to his attention from the college press 1 Cut out ruthlessly the tilt loafers fro from In among both students students students stu stu- dents and faculty even though some of them are arc sons of high- high priced alumni 2 2 Cut out the antiquated and nonsocial courses Make Take them all show results ill in the broadening of altruistic knowledge knowledge knowledge knowl knowl- edge and not alone as so frequently at present in in merely personal personal personal per per- satisfactions 3 Institute courses which shall function in a working knowledge of America as it is or is to be bc under Roosevelt Roosevelt- if anybody can be found competent to teach such courses If i not do ero it anyhow it will educate the faculty 4 Do a away way with the execrable injustices of pi outgrown marking systems and their regimentation of 5 Trim the fraternities of their follies and see ste that they contribute to the sanity of the campus or go out of business 6 ti Abolish Hell Week Neel and all its slanderous s publicity even if you do it with an ax 7 Build buildings that look more like workshops and less like cathedrals and put the money saved into faculty salaries C Cut t out the monumental poles The Tile p place ace for such is in the cemetery 8 8 Pay the faculty big shots what they are worth Keep them on the campus at any cost even if you have to lop of a few tag-enders tag or other frills 9 Trim down on productive non-productive research by br nonproductive non tive meaning without social value and then emphasize teaching teaching teaching teach teach- ing ing- ability 10 Take the PhD degree off its pedestal The lure of pure intellectualism is gone al and l the college may as well accept the fact 11 Give academic freedom to students who deserve it Take it away away when they fail to do so 12 Abolish old-fashioned old compulsory chapel Substitute peppy college all assemblies with a dash of the inspirational t or spiritual 13 Abolish required military training There is no doubt that these suggestions present rather radical thought but at the same time they would undoubtedly result in vast improvement in in the college curricula Almost all aU of them could be adopted here at Utah and th the school would be much the better off as a result Many fany of the more progressive colleges in the nation have already adopted a number of the above suggestions We Ve can only oneY wait until our own school wakes up aP to the fact that the present educational system is in need of changes to fit the times Until such a time comes we shall have to rely on the minority progressive element of the school to do what it can canto canto canto to keep us up with the times |
