Show Celebration of Founders Founders' Day Recalls History five Eighty-five years ago tomorrow the legislature of the State of Deseret Deseret Des- Des eret cret presented a bill to Governor Brigham Young providing for the establishment of one o of the first institutions of higher learning in inthe inthe inthe the Far West acres of land landat landat landat at the place now occupied by the university were lere set aside and improvements improvements improvements im im- im- im begun but the government government government govern govern- ment took over the land for the tIle establishment of Fort Douglas before before before be be- fore any buildings were erected The first class was held at the home of f J John JohnJack kL November r 15 1850 under the direction of Chancellor Chancellor Chan Chan- Orson Spencer AM A.M. and Dr Cyrus Collins who taught high school subjects In 1851 the school was moved to the old Council House located where the Deseret News building now is but before the end of the year was discon dIscon- It was vas taken over in 1867 as a business business' school and in 1869 Dr John R. R Park reopened it in ina a knitting factory building near the present location of the West Vest High school In 1884 a building was erected at the present site o of the West High school to the in increased increased increased in- in creased student body and in 1900 the Physical Science the Industrial Education and the Liberal Arts buildings were built as the first movement toward the present location location location loca loca- tion o of the campus Dr Joseph Kingsbury became president in 1892 and except for forthe forthe forthe the years ears 1897 1894 when Dr James E. E Talmage was president held office until 1916 when Dr J John Andreas Widstoe took over the reins He was succeeded in 1921 by Dr George Thomas |
