Show Chatter Box Dear Suzy, There is going to be a good mar-, ket for amphibious cars in these parts if people keep on trying to drive them as they do at present Take for instance Jeff and Belva Jones; they went out Hot Springs way the other day and on the way kept an active eye for cut offs and smooth spots where they could tootle along in pleasure instead in-stead of the usual roads. They were doing nicely and came to a long hard pan looking flat that looked ideal for making many knots and saving time. Jeff turned the car off the road and they went along the hard pan in high glee and gear for many a mile. The hard pan took the general direction of the Hot Springs and the road to another higher level direction for the same place, so neither was close to the other as the Jones' buzzed along. It was nice going until something some-thing went snap and they started start-ed to bog down in what looked like hard clay. To say that the car finally sunk to the running boards would be in error because cars these days don't have a running run-ning board. To get into a car now you step rather high and put your foot inside the car, then you bump 1 your head; back out again, swear a little under your breath and then j try it over. After you swear out lnnrl vmi make it. from the glove compartment in their wake, and have not missed anything or had need of anything that was in the glove compartment compart-ment before that fatal day. Which is the way with glove compartments. compart-ments. I think all the car manufacturers manu-facturers put glove compartments in cars for is knowing that humans hu-mans are too lazy to clean one out, will trade the car in when the compartment gets full. So Jeff and Belva have an em-! em-! pty glove compartment and will not trade the car in for some years yet. Also they are going back to the straight and narrow, which they usually follow, anyway, and will not be looking for shortcuts in the future. Also some day they plan on going to Hot Springs and seeing the place because after get ting out of the mire they found that the sun was sinking rather low and Jeff knew the cows would be lowing in the meadow and anxious anx-ious for him to tend them in a way that you tend a cow. There are any number of con! fused people in Delta wondering what is the correct title for Doc Bishop Bird. Those who employ his services in a medical way prefer pre-fer to call him Doc; and those who' ask his services spiritually use the term bishop.. But there are those who are asking neither of those services from him and they wonder which title is proper. All doubts now as to what to call him are allayed and he has a new one that can be used by one and all and that is "Commodore". "Commod-ore". It seems that Doc is somewhat some-what of a boating fan and likes to put his boat in and out of the reservoir, even though he doesn't start up the engine and take a spin. The other day he was busy at the boat landing on the reservoir reser-voir and was puttering about the boat, which was setting in the To get back to Belva and Jeff we find them outside the car now, knee deep in ooze and looking the situation over. It was not a pleasant pleas-ant situation they faced with the car settled down like a broody hen In the mire, and them about a foot shorter each as they had sunk that much theyselves by then. In casting about for something to pry the car out of the mud with, they found nothing but bleached blea-ched oxen bones from another ill-fated ill-fated party of slightly earlier date, and a few rotten boards from a prairie schooner. They had seen many times in their travels huge piles of junk and garbage that people had thrown along side the highways and wished that the peo pie who had been before them had not .been so clean in their habits, as the flat was as barren of junk and trash, weeds, cans, brush and the like as Tom Allred's head is of hair. Luckily for them they thought of the glove compartment and in opening It a shower of junk fell on the floor of the car that was ample to lift the wheels up, and more left over too. This they put under the wheels and backed back to firmer ground, leaving the stuff water and for some reason Doctor Bishop, the Commodore, hopped in his car was to take off for someplace some-place else. . There rises a question as to whe ther he can handle these new fan-gled fan-gled cars with all their gadgets and controls, and whether he can or not he must have pushed or pulled the wrong gadget and in doing so went one way when he had Intentions of going another. The result was not what the Commodore Com-modore desired as he had had the car washed lately and did not like the washing it was getting then. Because some how the car was in the reservoir and Doc Bishop was in the car sitting there with water up to his dickey, if he had been wearing a dickey. The result was that Myron lost a lot of Interest In boating and 1 it is doubtful if he will be on hand when the JayCees toss their regatta re-gatta andVboat racing event there In the near future. Of course If M E. will do his act over I am sure that the JayCees will have a full house and standing room will be at the premium. What do you think? Toots. |
