Show Shows Bucks For every buck deer in the Oak Creek deer herd there are 6.6 does; for every doe there is .87 fawns. This is the indicated condition revealed re-vealed by studies recently completed com-pleted by the agencies interested in the management of this herd. Each year, sometime after the deer hunt but before bucks start shedding their antlers, these studies stud-ies are made by local Game Wardens, War-dens, Fish and Wildlife Service Representatives, Re-presentatives, Bureau of Land Man agement and Forest Service officials. offic-ials. Each group of deer seen is classified as to large bucks, small bucks, does and fawns. Where it is not possible to classify every an imal in a group, the entire group is listed as unclassified. This precaution pre-caution is necessary to obtain a true sample, since the large bucks are readily distinguishable at a greater distance than are the small bucks, does and fawns. These data are used in correlation correlat-ion with pre-hunt sex classifications classificat-ions and with hunters removal data, such as total numbers removed re-moved and the sex of removed deer to determine whether or not changes in management are needed need-ed to perpetuate the herd or range, also for determining the herd populations to serve as a check against spring census herd determinations. |
