Show Scouts Take Icy Nature Hike On Coldest Day Saturday Boy Scouts, of Delta First ward took a hike through the snow and drifts to their camp site at the grove at the reservoir. Led by Glen Swalberg and Truman Jeffery, the hikers left Delta at 11 a. m., following the plowed road west. After a roundabout way, close to 5 miles hike, they shoveled through a path to the grove and made ready rea-dy to cook a meal. By then it was 10 below, and the warmest part of the day. The boys had steaming steam-ing hot soup made. By "the time it was dished up it was cooled, and needed no blowing. Five minutes later it was solid. They poured milk from bottles into their cups. By the time they raised it to their lips notheing poured from the cup. The milk was solid. Several more courses served up the same, so the boys went back to hiking. Making the trip were Rex Jense, La Verl Jackson,-Carl Jeffery, Reed Draper, LaVoy Robison, 'Richard Snow, Gerald Black, Wendell Knight, Kn-ight, Gerald Watts and Ray Max-field. Max-field. They hiked around the reservoir, res-ervoir, where they counted close to 200 ducks, frozen to death. Many others they found barely able to move. They brought home some to try and save and release later. They took a number of pictures, recording their lactivites. In one picture every .boy was holding a duck he had easily caught. After exploring the snow , sometimes headfirst the party started for home about 5 p. m. That day had been the coldest day of Jan., following fol-lowing one of the coldest nights, 29 below. It warmed up after dark to 9 below Saturday night. |
