At this last meeting president Clo Hilton had aranged with Mr. Merlin Christensen to have the band play several numbers. Mr. Christensen urged parents to have their children participate in the Summer Music Program, stating that there will be a band teacher come to Hinckley during the summer sum-mer months. Anyone wishing to enter a new student in the band is urged to do so. The numbers of the program for the evening included an oration by Daryl Cropper, a pantomime by Lawrence Wright, both of these be ing the numbers which entered the state speech meet, a vocal solo by Anna Mae Webb and a solo by Douglas Carter; Birdie Lou Hilton Hil-ton read her winning essay, "What Kind of An American Am I". Principal Ward Spendlove gave a report on the convention held at Salt Lake which he attended. This was an International Convention on Childhoon Education, wherein nations from throughout the world were represented and almost every state in the union had representatives represent-atives present. He listed the objectives ob-jectives of the convention and com mented especially on the fact that one speaker stated that the success suc-cess of the program in his school in Cal., with regards to finances was due to the fact that P. T. A. had a member present- at every meeting of the school board, to help with the making of plans. The main speaker of the evening even-ing was Principal D. A. Allred, who stated that the objective in education educ-ation is good citizenship. He expressed ex-pressed thanks to Merlin Christensen Christen-sen for all he had done in the band work, and complimented him for working so hard under negative circumstances which he had had. Mr. Allred also spoke of the necessity he felt in the raising of the educational standards. He stated sta-ted that too often high schools are lax in their requirements of the students. He stated that the cooperation co-operation of the communities was needed in order to do this, and that it be done so. Mr. Allred pointed out the financial finan-cial losses to the county when a student is absent from school, as well as the loss in interest and attitude at-titude which is present in any student who misses a great deal of school. Almost a dollar is lost to the school each time a child is absent, according to the equalization equaliz-ation funds provided by the state. Millard County has lost $15000 in 1 school absences this year, he stated. |
