I could save more than that betting on a "long shot." Speaking of comics I just fin-ished reading a timely article en-titled "How You Help Draw Comic Strips". 70,000,000 people read some comic strip or other every day and most of them are adults. The affairs of the Bumsteads, the quar-reling of Maggie and Jiggs, the birth of Sparkle Plenty and the adventures of Steve Canyon are taken as seriously as the atom bomb. If a cartoonist knowingly or un-wittingly tampers with the likes or dislikes of his family of fans 7 I can't decide if I like Chic Young's comic strip "Blondie", or not ... It sure gives my wife funny ideas on how to economize. 9 One day last week, my wife ask-ed me if she could have her ears 1 pierced, and order a set of gold earrings, along with a pair of new 1 shoes. (Birthday's coming up). I told her yes. 1 Well, the next night when I got 1 home from work, she told me how 1 ?he was going to save me money jn the deal. It seems that some 1 friend had informed her that it A'ould cost at least three dollars 3 to have her ears pierced. The 1 'surgery", plus the cost of the 3 earrings, added up to quite a sum. 3 ome to find out she wanted an- - bther pair of shoes at two dol-ar- s less than the earring business and she calls that saving mon- - ' lllli:11!!)!';'!!! i!llirini!l!IHI!ll!l!ll!l!il!l!!!Ml ni;iill:i!lllllll!!ii;i;ilIilll!;Niniil he soon discovers the force behind public opinion. One Southern publisher won't print the Orphan Annie strip and carries an explanation on the front page saying that Annie will not be resumed until she gets the hell out of the realm of "nasty" pol-itics ... of course, Orphan Annie hasn't grown an inch for years, so I don't think she knows the dif-ference. As for her dog, Sandy, he's the oldest dog I've ever seen or heard of . . . for that matter. I've heard a lot of people ask why Johnson of Delta sat on the bench during the latter, part of the Delta - Beaver basketball game last Friday night ... I don't und-erstand it 'myself. Of agencies working for the De-partment of Agriculture are rep-resented on the Council. In addi-tion this group felt the other ag-encies working with the farmer should be represented; hence the Ag teachers of three high schools and the Supervisors for the Vet-eran training program were asked to participate. During the year 1947 the Council has sponsored and worked for the achievement of six special tours at which four hundred forty-on- e farmers, livestockmen and towns-people were in attendance. These tours were for the purpose of show--in- g the public some of the prob-lems that have been undertaken for the good of Agriculture. They include Range developments, Irri-gation practices and principles, Livestock grading, feeding and management practices, Dairy pro-duction, .and Poultry production. These functions-- have been well at-tended and the public has expres-sed definite interest in this type of program. Sincere appreciation is here ex-pressed for the help given by the people in general. May we suggest that the same cooperative spirit be extended to Mr. Larson and the Council through 1948. Rodney G. Rickenbach Chairman U.S.D.A. Council Millard County Poultry Commit-tee in a meeting last week, worked out the following schedule for a group of meetings to be held on Poultry production as it affects our county. It is hoped that after this series of meetings a much better under-standing of the problems confront-ing poultry men of the county will be gained. Please make special note of the following dates and plan to attend. Poultry Meetings 1. Feb. 4. "Brooding and Feed-ing Chicks", Grant Ivans, Ranshaw Hatcheries, Salt Lake City, Utah. 2. Feb. 11, "Feeding and Manag-ing the Laying Flock", Lawrence Morris, U. S. A. C. Logan. 3. Feb. 18, "Housing and Equip- ment for the Layer", Dr. Hugh Hurst, Utah Poultry, Salt Lake City, Utah. 4. Feb. 25, "Turkey Production", Lawrence Morris, U. S. A. C. Logan. |
