Flies Need Controlling Every community and every home can aid in being fly free by spraying their yards and buildings. Briefly here are some ways you can make your community or farm and home fly proof. 1. Organize your community or neighborhood and arrange for a good power spray outfit to cooperatively co-operatively spray all farmsteads and live-stock at about the same time with wettable DDT. 2. Cover every possible spot a-round a-round the farmstead with OOT where flies might rest or congregate. congre-gate. 3. Use DDT sprays for all possible pos-sible benefits which may be obtained ob-tained from them, but do not neglect neg-lect sanitary measures of , farm, home or community. 4. Where water toilets are not feasible, replace open-box privies with sanitary privies. Do not permit per-mit flies to breed in nor visit human hum-an excreta. 5. On homes, use a small paint brush and paint all windows and door screens with 5 percent DDT in kerosene. This should be done at least twice each season. For large scale farmstead operations, oper-ations, use wettable DDT in water. Apply the DDT at a strength of 10 to 15 pounds of 50 percent wettable wet-table DDT in each 100 gallons of water. Each gallon should cover aboufone thousand square feet of wall or ceiling surface Use one pint to one quart of this solution per animal in treating livestock. If you use hand equipment instead in-stead of power sprayers, you may use either the above type and mixture mix-ture of DDT, or you may use emulsions, emul-sions, of DDT. When using the wettable wet-table DDT it is necessary to have good agitation in the sprayer to keep the mixture stirred up and get uniform strength throughout the application. This agitation is not necessary with DDT emulsions, for they mix readily with water and do not settle to the bottom. The emulsion concentrate, as purchased, pur-chased, should be diluted according accord-ing to the directions on the container. con-tainer. If you are spraying around the home only, use five percent DDT in hiyhly refined, deodorized kerosene kero-sene that is, kerosene with the odor removed. Spray or paint this on window and door screens at least twice during the season. This mixture can be used inside as well as outside. Commercial mixtures can be bought.
