Wj -Getting her start in 4-H work with the purchase of two beef calves cal-ves in 1943, Donna Christensen, 18, Delta, since then has completed 5 beef projects, 5 clothing projects, 2 home furnishings, helped bottle 550 quarts of fruit and vegetables every year, helped with the family garden and been a club leader for two years. Under the direction of Mrs. Vera B. Paxman, who acted as leader, Miss Christensen and four of her girl friends organized a clothing club in 1944. Miss Christensen was elected president of the "Smile, Sew, and Save Club" who chose for their motto "Plan your work and work your plan." The first year project consisted of a cotton dress, apron, darn and hot pad. Miss Christensen received blue ribbons On all articles in the Millard County fair and her dress was chosen to represent the county coun-ty in the exhibit at the state fair in Salt Lake City. Miss Frances Gormley, county home demonstration agent, checked check-ed the completed work of the group in their second clothing endeavor en-deavor in the winter of 1945. Spun rayon dresses, slips and shoe bags were completed in this program during which time Miss Christensen served as vice-president. Miss Christensen's work in the third, fourth and fifth " years of clothing brought her more blue ribbons for her workmanship. Her costumes made in her fourth and fifth years also took her to the state fair. During the years Miss Christensen Christen-sen was a 4-H member, she made 196 articles of clothing for many people as well as for her family. Among these articles were seven pair of Red Cross flannel pajamas and ten Army Red Cross utility bags. Sewing is not the only benefit gained from her 4-H work. In the five years of club membership, Miss Christensen planted the family fam-ily garden, supplying all the vegetables veg-etables needed. She has assisted in the preserving of 2,200 quarts of fruits and vegetables during this time as well as the preparation prepara-tion of 220 meals besides many separate dishes. Last spring she redecorated her sister's complete apartment from experience gained in the 4-H home furnishings projects. Other awards received through 4-H work included blue ribbon honors at the Millard County fair and the state fair for a demonstration demonstra-tion on "Worked Buttonholes" which Miss Christensen and Beth Bunker presented. "Alert today, Alive tomorrow" was the title of Miss Christensen's essay entered in the 4-H Safety Contest in which she received a safety award. She is also recipient of the Carl R. Gray Scholarship a-ward a-ward for achievement in the 4-H program. Passing on her knowledge of 4-H work to the younger girls in her community, Miss Christensen has been a leader for two years. Bllue ribbons were received on exhibits ex-hibits of home furnishings from her group in county and state fairs. Besides her record of achievement achieve-ment in 4-H work, Miss Christensen has been active in school and community com-munity activities. She is now attending at-tending the USAC where she is a freshman majoring in home economics. eco-nomics. Mr. and Mrs. Don Moody, and daughters, Cheryl, Beth and Kay, left Wednesday for California, for a week's visit in Los Angeles and Baldwin Park with members of Mr. Moody's family. His brother, E. R. Moody, and wife and two children, from Baldwin Park, visited in Delta and Deseret a week ago. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Holman, and daughter, Wallie, who have been in Salt Lake City since Feb. 22, where Mr. Holman was on jury duty, are expected home this week. They drove to Logan over the weekend, taking Mrs. Holman's mother there. Mr. "and Mrs. V. S. Barney spent Saturday and Sunday in Salt Lake City, making their first trip in their new car, and visiting Pat Barney, who Is in the hospital recovering from burns received recently, at the Lyman farm, in a gas explosion. explo-sion. Pat is doing very well, and expects to return home this week Another brother, Bob Barney, from California, was also there for the visit. Don Bird, from the AC, spent the weekend in Delta with his parents Dr. and Mrs. M. E. Bird, arriving ir time to take in the game Fridaj night at Beaver. |
