Show interesting talk AT B. Y. C. Yesterday morn, at devotional service ser-vice the B. Y. ollege was thrilled os it has not been for years by the Blmplo recital of war experiences by a lately returned soldier from tbi battle fields of France. Knowing what was coming, Prof. Hoblnn'jn, In charge of the music program, prepared pre-pared tho atmosphere by having the audience sing once more son;o stirring stir-ring stanzas from the late war song. Rudolph Farr, a member of the student-body, was then Introducec. by President Henderson as a man five times wounded and twice making mak-ing his getaway after capture by the enemy. Mr. Farrs' homo" Is In Tucson, Arizona, and ho Is hero attending school on tho Invalidated pension plan. Tall, fair-haired, and still boyish-looking, he seems anything but a Jwnr fvoteran, till J10 (begins to toll things that hnppencd 'over there' Then he succeeds In gripping the attention and stirring the emotions of his hearers as no practiced orator ora-tor or word-painter could possibly do. And therein lies the strango contradiction con-tradiction of It all. In Mr. Farr's recital re-cital there was complete absence of the usual devices of rhetoric and elocution. Ho merely stumbled along In broken sentences, with frequent pauses to get control of his voice, and yet for an hour ho held both student and teachers spell bound; now gripped with horror at ghastly scenes of blood, next stirred to Indignation In-dignation at somo unutterable Instance In-stance of German brutality, occasionally occasion-ally evoking a laugh, but often';r drawing tears from his listeners. Tho story proved a fine tonic In character formation. It taught courage, cour-age, fortitude, loyalty, love ot country, coun-try, but especially hatred of war. Needless to say tho students feel a thrill of pride In having suet n classmate. class-mate. As a further sample of his mottle, It was learned that he turns his pension over to his aged parents and Is making his way through school, handicapped though ho Is by his wounds. Space precludes going Into details of tho recital; especially as tho narrator nar-rator strongly urged to prepnre the story for publication In ono of our homo Journals. |
