Show H . COMMENCEMENT SPIRIT. B It is common for wise and disillusioned elders to poke M fun at the spirit of school and college commencements i-ffl ITow little these graduates know of life, is remarked -? What big things they are going to do, what impossible iH dreams of achievement they entertain. What high ideal they are going to pursue, which afterwards ihey-findwill be impracticable. . , It is most fortunate that there are those who have courage to go ahead, try out new ideas, risk new enterprises, enter-prises, dream new dreams, and try to work them out.. If it were not for this-spirit of yoUth, no wars would be fought for justice and liberty. It is young people who push ahead and start new enterprises. It is too easy for older people to get into a critical habit of mind. Every idea that is. proposed has to them its weaknesses. They have become able by experience to detect possibilities of failure. That makes them hesitat-ing hesitat-ing about attempting new things. They dally, weigh, and ponder, and as a consequent don't accomplish much, either for themselves or the community. It is a blessing not to see all the possibilities of failure. Young people do not see these adverse chances and they go ahead with some courage. They may fall down again 'and again, but all the time they are learning and getting somewhere. Finally their courage, enterprise and ambition ambi-tion lead them on to substantial success. It is with this spirit that school and college graduates come into the community. Let no one throw any wet blankets over their hopes and erpectations. For one thing , they have a better equipment than their fathers and mothers started with. And they will realize a lot more of their hopes than some people think. |
