Show B DEAD AS A DOOR NAIL. H The Joint Board and Control bill, recommended by the H code commission, and fathered by Representative Alma B fjreenwood, appears to be dead as a door nail. The bill H -viis too raw to pass in its original form, and between the H Democratic bosses struggling for platform pledges, and H 1 Jie legislature in its efforts to handle the mass of matter H Ijsfore it, the good in the bill in all probability will die H witli the bad, and the work of the code commission, to- K gslher with the people's money that it spent will be H -wasted. The bill, emasculated and irregular, has just been H xashed through the house, apparently in order to make B sax effort towards goo faithd, but from reports from the V capital it will soon find its way to the graveyard. B appointed, and not without cause. It is really too bad B he code commission and the legislature. M Representative Greenwood, it is said, feels badly over m the matter, as it was one of his pets, and he therefore was B n looking forward to its passage with much satisfaction. H. Public school supirintendents and teachers are also dis- B appointed, and not without cause. It is really too bad l that so much good that the bill contained should be sac- m , rificed. The bad ought to have been weeded out so that B m ihe state could have profited by tho good, but such action m as now almost beyond hope. Representative Greenwood m and the public school people should not attach any blame B to the friends and patrons of the U. A. C. and the U. of U. B -who opposed it. 'They should charge all such accounts to B the code commission and the legislature. H Taxpayers also should know precisely where to place H any hlame that may attach. The former legislature cre- H ' ated the code commission, and appropriated the money H for its expenses. Governor Spry appointed the members H -except those that were named in the law itself. The H duties therefore were plain, and the time for report was H mandatory. The commission, headed by the state superin- H -tendent sought to go beyond its powers, and evaded the H Jaw as to time of making its report. The money has been H spent, and the belated report was in such form that the H present legislature was not capable of segregating the H -good from the bad. It is evident that the fault is with H :ine code commission and the legislature. BBM o |
