Edison, chairman of the naval consulting board, and Henry Ford went to the shipping board today with suggestions that may provldo an emergency fleet of steamers almost overnight. Edison suggested that the government govern-ment take over all the American sailing sail-ing vessels afloat and convert them Into twin screw ships wherever practicable. prac-ticable. It wai said many of the ships could be converted con-verted probably in as short time as thirty days. Many vessels of from 700 to 1500 tons could be made into steamships with little effort, and be given a speed ranging from ten to twelve and twenty knots. The shipping board will conduct experiments ex-periments immediately along the tines suggested by Edison and will consider Ford's offer as well. |
