Show AD CHAUTAUQU A LECTURER TlblS HOW ' TO MAKE A-CtallTY I "Where there Is no vision tho people peo-ple must perish," and tho vision of Ezeklel where ho saw the valley of dry bones, was tho principal themo of J. C. Herbsman, representative and lecturer of tho Ellison-White Chautauqua system, at tho Commercial Commerci-al Club dinner Tuesday evening. Mr. Herbsman mentioned many cities In tho United States which had decayed because of tho lack of vision in them, while on the othor hand their sister cltie3 had forged ahead and become the capitals and Industrial Indus-trial centers because (hey had leaders with vision who planned ahead. Ono striking examplo of vision, remarked Mr. Herbsman, was the establishment of a colony In the mountain desert by Drlgham Young. A veritable Eden has sprung from tho efforts of him and hU people. Mr. Herbsman related the vlslori of Ezeklel, where ho saw a valley of bones and they were many and dry. "This Is a clear diagnosis of every community. It gives us the causo of conditions nnd tho remedy. There nro dry bones In every community. Somo teachers and ministers nre dry bones. They build a wall around themselves and their Interests and take no active part with the llvo business men in tho upbuilding of the city. Tho tightwad Is an exceedingly exceed-ingly dry bono. He sits back, never gives, while tho other fellow Is always al-ways giving money and service to build up the town and Increase tho roJuo of the property et 'tho tightwad. tight-wad. Somo of the farmers aro dry, bones. They havo secured tho land, are Independent financially, but will gtvo no service to the public or help to make the town grow. This applies to some of tho business men as well. Indifferent peoplo aro dry bones. They nre In favor of this and that, have good intentions, but that Is as far as thoy go. The won't work publicity. The most vicious dry bono Is tho knocker. When ho dies bo t'hould be burled, llko tho old Irish woman Bald to the pastor concerning the devil, ho should bo burled face downward so that the harder he knocks tho farther down he goes. "The question for the community Is how to get tho .dry bones together, breathe tho breath ot life Into them so they will becamo living and useful use-ful bodies. This Is brought about by community activity. Perhaps you can get tho tightwad Interested If you show him whoro ho Is being benefitted by the money which comes Into his pocket. If not that way, take tho money from his pockets, and that will suro arouse him. Invito In-vito the knocker to como In and kick, and kick at tho right tlmo and place. Thero must bo no divisions, pet Ideas and selfishness must go, Individualism Individual-ism must glvo way to co-oporatlon, co-ordination and unity. An active commercial club Is tho one organization organiza-tion which can bring these conditions about.' Tho Labor and Supply bu-roau bu-roau and the Homo Garden movement, move-ment, especially .this year, are tho best forms of community activity." Tho speaker called attention to tho up-to-dato stores, tabernacle square, tabernacle and temple buildings, nnd other municipal and government buildings In Logan; nlso tho comfort stations, flno hotel, lnterurban nnd railroad stations, newspapers, condensed con-densed milk factories, strcot pave-mont, pave-mont, water system, building of highways, high-ways, educational Institutions, sewor system, fire department, and tho beautiful Cucho valley. In conclusion, Mr. Herbsman made a stirring appeal for support to the government In tho present war. Tho Issuo Is whether or not autocracy or democracy shall provall. It Is not a war against tho Gorman people. It is against autocracy. Do careful not to offend tho Germans In this country, coun-try, as the most of thora aro patriotic patri-otic and will stand back of this government. gov-ernment. Pres. E. It. Owen presided nnd thanked the members for their bur-port bur-port In tho movements tho club has undortaken.
