Show Germans Make Airplane Raid On Chatham London, Sept. 4. In last night's ..air raid 107 persons wero killed and 86 wounded at Chatham, It is announced officially. The victims were naval ratings. Six airplanes took part in tho raid. In addition to the naval casualties one civilian was killed and six wero injured. The announcement follows: "Lord French (commander of the Drltlsh homo forces), reports that last night's air raid was carried out by about six enemy airplanes which proceeded up tho south bank of tho Thames estuary to Chatham. Bombs wero dropped In tho Isle of Thanet and In the Sheerness-Chat-ham area between 10:40 p. m. and 11:30 p. m. There wero no army casualties. Civilian casualties reported re-ported at present wero: "Killed, ono; Injured, six. "The material damage was slight. Our machines went up and antl-alri craft guns came Into action, but without with-out result. "Tho secretary of the admiralty reports that in the course of tho air raid last night the following casualties casual-ties were caused to naval ratings: Killed 107; wounded 86." Chatham Is on the east bank of the Medway, 30 rallos southeast of London. London, Sept. 4. Continuing their raids over Belgium, British aviators on Sunday night made attacks in tho vicinity or Bruges. A British airplane air-plane fought six Germans and shot down one of them.' Tho following account ac-count of theso operations wero given out today: "Naval aircraft made a bombing ; raid at midnight Sunday on tho 'docks, submarlno shelters and rall-; rall-; I way sidings at Bruges. Bombs wero i obsoned to oxplodo over tho objectives objec-tives and flro was caused adjacent to tho lock grates of tho Ecluso canal. "A raid was also mado early Monday Mon-day on tho nlrdromo at Varssonaoro 1 (4 1-2 miles southwest of Bruges). " Bombs wero seen to oxplodo among tho sheds. Ono of our machines was attacked by six hostile aircraft nnd succeeded In shooting down ono, completely com-pletely out of control. In nn engagement engage-ment between one of our aircraft pa- trols and enemy machines thero were three decisive combats. One of our machines failed to return." |
