Show 625,000 MEN REQUIRED IN FIRST DRAFT Washington, Juno 4. Plans of tho war department to draft from 000.-000 000.-000 to 1,500,000 men or tho 10,-mllllon 10,-mllllon who It Is estimated will register reg-ister tomorrow for tho now army, wero disclosed today by Provost Marshal Mar-shal General Crowder to tho Senate military affairs committee. Exemptions, Exemp-tions, ho said, probably would result in reducing tho nnmber to 625,000 taen for immedlato servlca. Whllo tho war department had originally or-iginally planned to first select 500,-000 500,-000 men, General Crowder told tho commltteo plans havo been rovlsed nnd It Is now proposed to roqulro 625,000. To sccuro this number, lie said, it probably will bo necessary to draft nt least 900,000 and possibly possi-bly 1,500,000 becauso of expected exemptions, ex-emptions, General Crowder told tho committee commit-tee tho tddltlonal 125,000 will bo needed to fill up vacancies in tho army and to keep training camps In continuous operation. When tho original or-iginal plans for serrlco from 500,-000 500,-000 men wero made, ho said, tho department de-partment had not planned to tend American forces abroad so soon. Casualties from foreign service,, he believed, stckneBB, etc., make necces-sary necces-sary a reserve of 125,000 men, in addition to the men on duty at training train-ing camps. General Crowder told tho committee commit-tee he favored Immedlato drafting of men registered rather than postponement postpone-ment of tho draft for several weeks after registration.
