Show This Teacher Blames Himself If Pupils Aim; Failures In the March American Magazine is an Interesting article by Merle Crowell about tho school of Engineer lng of tho University of Cincinnati, where the Btudents havo to work with their hands In fondry and railroad yard at regular, paid jobs in order to graduate. The first aim of the University Uni-versity is to elimlnato misfits and the school has probably a higher percentage percent-age ot successful graduates than any other In tho country. It Is tho Idea of Dean Herman Schneider who said regardinglt: " 'If an earnest student with average aver-age brains is not a success we feel It is largely our fault. We havo not by a long shot mastered the science ot eliminating misfits. Sometime it takes us many months,, many shifts ot occupation, to determlno Just what work a youth is best fitted to do. But when a cooperative student (one who alternates in classroom and shop work) remains with us two year3 we are able to guarantee that he will be a success In tho job to which we assign him.' "Schnelded's system works. I found abundant paper proof of this fact In tho records of tho university; but tho practical affirmation came from the lips of Cincinnati's manufacturers, manu-facturers, contractors, operators, from tho directors of eighty Industries Indus-tries which are cooperating with Schneider's school In tho problem of making men efficient, I talked with moro than twenty of these omployers of labor. Their testimony was enthusiastic en-thusiastic and unanimous." |
