Show PLUMS FOR MATHONIAH I AND WILLIAM: H The recent appointments of Mathoniah Thomas, Demo-H Demo-H ' cratic State Chariman, and William Wallace, ex-Demos' cratic National Committeeman, to the position of mem-H mem-H hers of the Water Rights Commission has caused consider-B consider-B able speculation on the part of many citizens. In the first H place these citizens did not know there was such a commis-H commis-H sion, and in the second place they did not know that Math-H Math-H oniah and William would take anything that did not carry H a fat salary with it, and right there is where said citizens H imve been doubly mistaken. H While the people have been serenely sleeping thinking H that the pledges of the democracy were all that was neces- H sary to insure economy in state affairs, the legislature H v has steadly and carefully, but surely been enacting laws to H take care of the pie hunters, and Mathoniah and William H Tiave not been at the state house for the past sixty days H for nothing. The legislature recently passed a bill creating a "Water H Bight Commission" providing for three citizens to be H. appointed by the Governor, "one of whom shall be learn-H; learn-H; cd in the law; one of whom shall be a practical engineer; Hi and one of whom shall be a person who is familiar with H -water rights and the resources of the state." State En-H En-H gineer William D. Beers was selected for the first, and Messrs Thomas arid Wallace for the last two. M The bill does not fix a salary, leaving the matter in the H hands of the Board of Examiners, and the last few lines of the bill, as originally drawn, appropriates just $18,000. H to take care of the expense. It is said by those on the iu- -side that the salary will be $4,000.00 or over. From the fact that an Engineer of Mr. Beer's class could not be ex-H ex-H -pected to look at anything less makes it clear that the H -salary will be at least the amount stated. B 554,000.00 each for occasional service on a board of this B "kind is a nice little recognition for Mathoniah and William. B We say occasional service from the fact that the engineer B will be expected to do the work, while the others draw the B Tiay. Just another evidence of democratic economy, all B of which goes towards the filling of another page in the B taxpayers book of experience. B No wonder the appropriation bill creeps close to one B "half million dollars. No wonder it is the largest in the B 3iistory of the State. It is purely democratic. B 0 |
