Show NEW FEATURES OF NORMAL WORK AT R. Y. COLLEGE Pursuant to the resolution passed, by tho General Church Board of Education, Ed-ucation, June 26, which gives to the Brigham Young College, as already announced through these columns, greater latitude In the Normal school, more emphasis is being placed in this department. Heretofore In tho collego, the psychology given has beeTI theoretical. This criticism might be (is well oxtended to tho psychology given In genoral throughout through-out the stnte. Psychology being a eclenco subject tho best results cannot can-not bo obtained without a well equip-laboratory equip-laboratory and without tho laboratory mothod ot'tcnchlng being used. Accordingly Ac-cordingly the collego hns equipped, this year, a room which will bo used hs a iisychologlcal laboratory. New and tho most modern equipment for this laboratory Is arriving from day to day. Some of tho apparatus already al-ready at hand consists' of such expensive ex-pensive Instruments as Smedley's Dy-namootcr Dy-namootcr and Dynamograpb, discrimination discrim-ination weights, kymograph, stop watches, head Calipers, wot spirometer spirome-ter Venler caliper, Holmgrens worsteds, wors-teds, and eye and ear models, etc. While this apparatus will be principally princip-ally used in tho advanced psychology psychol-ogy class, there will be an effort made to bring Bnrao laboratory work Into the elementary classes. Tho institution is very fortunate In having secured tho services of such a modern, well trained man ns Prof. J. E. Hickman who has for tho past two years been the head ot the Normal school of tho Brigham, Young College. Prof. Hickman Is a specialist in his work and his schooling In tho subjects which ho Is teaching has boon in recent yoors whon tho laboratory method has boen, in voguo In tho naBtorn schools. Another very Important addition In tho Normal department tho coming year is tho course of playground supervision su-pervision which will bo under the, direction ot Prof. J. It. Jenson and a course in gymnastics and folk dancing taught by Prof. Laura Poul-son. Poul-son. These two courses aro also In keeping with the modern spirit ot education In normal schools. Tho courso In plaj ground supervision will be open only to thoso who aro collego col-lego students and who aro preparing to become teachers. This c ourso takes up genoral principles and praci tical details such ns tho spirit and alms of tho playground and tho activities activ-ities for different sexes and ago groups; organisation and management manage-ment of hctlvltles, supervision, tour-nnments, tour-nnments, contests and exhibitions ot tho playground. Thero will also bo demonstration lessons and practice games given In connection with the Training school. Tho new courso In gymnastics and folk dancing Is also primarily Intended for samo clasi ot collego students as playground supervision. su-pervision. This courso alms to give to tho teachers tho power to teach proper school room gymnastics and school room donees as well as iJvi open air exercises on the playground. The' college might well bo proud of tho additional strength those new features will give to tho already, strong normal school, the work ot whloh has been recognized as stand; ard during the past year. |
