Conflicting Con-flicting reports made It impossible today to-day to determine definitely how many fishing smacks and lives had beon lost in the storm which swept the Gulf of Bt. Lawrence, Chaleur bay and the Straits ot Northumberland Friday. One report placed tho nnmbor ot dead at 125. Advices from Caraquet said 19 lives wero known to have been lost, ono vessel was qlsslng and nothing no-thing was known ot the fate ot the crews of two vessels reported ashore on Pokesudle Island. Caraquet, Shlppegan and Lamoque, the-headquarters ot Day Chalour fishing fish-ing fleet, are remote points and because be-cause ot broken wire communication it has been Impossible to get accurate accur-ate accounts ot the storm damage. The vessels that suffered from the gale were smalt schooners. Nearly every craft was manned only by members mem-bers of a single family, with tho father fa-ther In command and throe or four sons or other relatives composing tho crew. |
