He originally Intended to mako medicine his vocation, voca-tion, but abandoned the study at the end of one year, and In 1840 was ordained or-dained n priest of the Protestant Episcopal Epis-copal church. Assailed by religious doubts, he visited Rome In 1841 and was received Into the Roman Catholic church. Several years after his return to America he became president of St, John's college, Fordham, N, Y. In 1853 he became first bishop of Newark, New-ark, N. J. Here he founded Seton Hall, college and translated to tho archle-plscopal archle-plscopal see of Baltimore, thn highest honor tho church had to offer in the United States. I |
