Show APOSTLE HYRUM M. SMITH DIES IN SALT LAKE Salt Lake, Jan. 24, Apostlo Hyrum M. Smith, eldest son of President Presi-dent Joseph F, Smith of the Mormon Church, died shortly before 10 o'clock last night at the L. D. 8. hospital. hos-pital. Peritonitis developing from appendicitis ap-pendicitis was the direct cause. At the deathbed were his mother, Mrs. Edna Lambson Smith, immediate members of his family and his brothers; broth-ers; Apostle Joseph F. Smith, Jr., and Bishop David A. Smith of the presiding bishop's office. Stricken with appendicitis Friday evening, Apostle Smith's condition became serious, and Saturday evening even-ing it was found necessary to remove re-move him to the hospital. Examlna-ttlon Examlna-ttlon disclosed that his condition was critical. An immediate operation became be-came necessary. It was performed Sunday nfternoon by Dm. O. Olll Richards and Ralph T. Richards, and Aposttle Smith appeared to be out of danger Sunday evening. It became evident, however that peritonitis had set In. Mickelsen offered offer-ed prayers for him. , Ordained an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, October 24, 1901, Hyrum M. Smith, became an active figure in wards, stakes and missionary conferences of the Mormon Church, through which he traveled extensively. During September, Sep-tember, 1913, he was called to succeed suc-ceed Apostle Rudger Ctawson as the president of theEuropean mission of the church. Accompanied by his wife and four children he arrived at Liverpool, Liv-erpool, England, September 30, 1913. He returned to Salt Lake in 1916. ' Hyrum M. Smith was born in Salt Lake City on March 21, 1872, the eldest' son of President Joseph F. Smith and Edna Lambson Smith. In his youth he was carefully reared by his parents to an understanding of and faith in the Oospel of our Savior as Interpreted by the Mormon Church He 'attended the public schools and later the L. D. S. College from which he was graduated in 1894. Apostle Smith was married in November, No-vember, 1895, to Miss Idaho Bowman Bow-man of Ogden, and on the evening of the following day departed on a mission for his church to Oreat Britain.. From Liverpool he was appointed to the Leeds Conference. He was called to preside over the Newcastle Conference In October, 1896, a position which he held several sev-eral months. Returning to Salt Lake City that year he was appointed a home missionary mis-sionary and also acted as assistant teacher and corresponding secretary of the' twenty-fourth quorum of seventies. sev-enties. Ho was employed at the Z. C. M. I. where he remained until October 30, 1901. He also served as secretary of the Sunday Schools of Grant to Stake. Called to tho Quorum of Twelve Apostles ho formally was ordained by his father on October 24, 1901. He was summoned to Washington, D. 0., In 1904, to testify in tho caso of - Senator Reed Smoot, also an apostle, whose right to a seat In the United States Senate had been questlonel by foes of the church. ' Beside his parents, brothers, sisters, sis-ters, and widow, Apostle Smith Is survlved'oy four children, Joseph F. Ill, 18; Oeraldlne, 14; Margaret, 10. and Maxlne, 6 years of age. |
