Show TAX COLLECTOR COMING HERE INJEBRUARY I beg to adlse ou or certain plans In relation to the Individual Income tax which will relievo thu bankers from a large burden of the work thrust upon them during tho months of January and February, when Income tax forms must bo executed ex-ecuted nnd sent to the Collector or Internal Revenue. It Is a fact well recognized by my office that very many taxpayers seek the assistance or bankers In mnklni out their returns and that this practice prac-tice Is so general as to constitute a serious enroachment upon the banker's bank-er's time. In January and February 1918, when returns 'must bo mndo of Income receUed during tho year 1017, and when, because of the now and reduced exemptions or $1000 for single persons nnd $2000 for married persons, tho number or tax payers will bo enormously Increased, thcro will be Immensely gre.iter encroachment encroach-ment upon your time. You will bo pleased, therefore, td know that the plans referred to will relievo you from this burden lu u largo part, nt least. It Is tho purpose of Uils office to sond nn Income tax officer Into your county to nsslst all persons subject to the incomo lax law In making out their returns; to answer their uues- t Ions about thu law and to nsslst them In tho measure of his ability. Tills officer will bo ut I.ogan continuously con-tinuously from February 1 1 to February Feb-ruary 23, both dates Inclusive, llo will havo his office lu tho Court House and may bo found thero every day. Ho will havo an nniplo supply or Incomo tax forms, rendering It unnecessary for taxpayers who shall call upon him to ask for forms from this office, or for you to ask for them in advance of his arrival. Inasmuch In-asmuch as his stay at Logan will ho limited to tho dates specified and will not bo returned to jour county again, It Is of tho utmost lmpottnncc that all prospective taxpayers take advantage oT his presence thero by calling upou hlui. on one Al mo dates suggested, tho earlier tho date th" better. May I not, therefore, suggest to you tho wisdom nnd necessity, na protection of joursclf. If not ns n patriotic son Ice, of communlcntlug by letter, telephunu or otherwise with so man of your depositors as you hollcM. to have taxable Incomes, advising them of tho'dato when a government Income tax' officer will bo there and suggesting tho advisability advis-ability of culling upon him, nnd Instruct In-struct tho employees nt tho bank's windows to Impart this Information to depositors? Thero is a common nnd erroneous Impression that it Is tho government's duty to call upon tho taxpayer. On tho contrary, tho taxpayer must call upon tho government. If ho falls to report his incomo when duo he thereby there-by subjects himself to penalties ranging rang-ing from $20 to $1000 flno or Imprisonment. Im-prisonment. W. C. WHALEY, Collector. |
